Hi can anyone help me with the Macdonalds namely Henry & Jane (nee Robinson I think), married on 20 January 1859. They had a son Sinclair Nathaniel Henry born 29 March 1861 and baptised 5 May 1861, also another son Alfred Robert baptised 4 January 1863. They sailed from Gravesend on 20 March 1874 and then Plymouth on 25 March 1874 on the James Wishart headed for New Zealand where newspapers list them as Mr & Mrs Macdonald, St Clair and 3 siblings. Henry was a soldier in Ireland and the birth certificate says they lived in Dublin where he was a soldier but the baptisms are in England. If anyone can shed any light on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks Liz

Wow thanks for that, that is so cool. When they came out to NZ they had St Clair and 3 siblings. Having trouble finding the other two, maybe they were born in Ireland where Henry was stationed with the english army. Thanks once again. Liz

What were the other children called? This is the only other MACDONALD birth registered in Atherstone 1861-1874:
Births Sep 1864 MACDONALD John Walter Atherstone 6d 350
If Sinclair was born 29 March 1861, he ought to be on the 1861 census (taken 7 April) - it's odd he's not with is mother.

I thought that maybe because he would only have been 2 wks old they may not have mentioned him. The John Walter is in the 1881 census but they were already in New Zealand by then, not unless he went back to England. Cheers Liz

Even a 2 week old child ought to have been listed (some newborns are listed just as "baby" + surname), but it's possible he was missed off accidentally - just curious!
It looks as though Jane and the children must have left Atherstone after 1863, perhaps as you say to join her husband in Ireland - I can't see them in England on the 1871 census.

Hi, yes I think you are right, although they left to sail to NZ from England in 1874. Also they have had two more children but cant find them anywhere. Do you know of any way I could get a ships list with all the names on when they left on the James Wishart in March 1874. The report of it arriving in NZ only says Mr Henry Macdonald, Mrs Jane Macdonald, St Clair Macdonald and 3 siblings. I think maybe the other two siblings might be the Alfred Robinson and maybe John Walter but cant find a death for either of these in NZ, nor a marriage but can find both for St Clair. Liz

Hi again, have now found that Alfred Robinson died in 1868 in Chorlton, Lancashire. Also that when they came to NZ there was a Charles and a William on the boat with Henry, Jane and St Clair. Cant establish the full names of Charles and William but think that Charles may be Charles Rawlinson? born in Mar 1868 or thereabouts. Have found a couple of Williams born in Chorlton but not sure if they belong to Henry and Jane. Hope someone can find out more for me. Have just found a Henry John born in Chorlton in 1869. Have also found a Henry John who served in the boer war in NZ and who died in 1948 and would be the right age, if anyone can confirm that he is a son of Jane and Henry it would be great. Boy this is so addictive and quite time wasting, but what the heck. Cheers Liz
