Moralee or Moraley COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 24 September 09 19:07 UTC (UK) »

I have some extracts from the Haydon Bridge parish records around 1776 that refers to a place called Moraley or Moralee (both spellings are used).

Does anyone know where this is please.

I have found a High Moralee and a Low Moralee about 4 miles north of Haydon Bridge and a mile south of Wark. However I am not sure if these places are in the Haydon bridge parish (or chapelry).

thank you

Wark parish was born out of the extra large parish of Simonburm.

Like other parishes Wark was made up of "townships" In Wark's case, sixteen.

One of the sixteen was Warksburn. Communities within Warksburn township included Low Moralee and High Moralee.

Moden map ref for Low M = NY840790.
Low M Farm = ditto
High M = NY858775

Another place Moralees lies within Ingoe, one of the "townships" that comprised Stamfordham parish.

To see these places on ancient maps... go to site   communities.northumberland.gov.uk
Enter the Wark ( on Tyne) community, from left hand menu choose "PLANS".
See Marelee on Speed's map of 1610. See Moralees on Armstrong's map of

Michael1769. On Greenwood's map of 1820 see High and Low. On map of 1828 see High Moralees.

On photograph site "geograph.org" see modern photo of Low Moralee Farm ( me good at links ! )

There are two sets of Morilees in Tynedale; High and Low Morilee  on the Gofton burn in Wark parish (formerly Simonburn) ; East and West Morilee at the junction of the Allen and South Tyne rivers in Haydon parish. Either or both produced a local surname.

thank you all I think you have cracked it  Smiley

I have found the Morilee Peter mentions at the junction of the Allen and South Tyne rivers spelt as Morralee on an Ordnance Survey map. I think this is the correct moralee for my folks as it fits in with their later appearance in Allendale and is clearly within the Haydon Bridge parish.

The first Moralee I found just south of Wark was confusing me as I have folk from the same time period from Bellingham and Simonburn and of course they are not in the Haydon Bridge registers

Thank you all for your help
