Boa or Stuart (STEWART)
« on: Friday 25 September 09 08:19 UTC (UK) »

Looking to trace family with the name Boa or Stuart.I think spelling of stuart could of been changed and the right spelling is Stewart.
The boa are from Longard-Glen Cannich and think the stuarts from Dingwall Inverness.
And also does anyone know how i can trace schools around Inverness back to 1930s onwards
Hope someone can help.
Thank you

Fiona, I think the Boa's were shepherds from the Borders, Iain Thomson's book "The Long Horizon" has, I think, a bit on the Boa's with a photo, I can't find my copy so can't check but its a good read whatever....Skoosh.

Hi,sorry i should of added this last time, the only info i have on my grandmother is the following:she worked as a housekeeper at the lodge in 1926 when my dad was born.If i could get the staffing records for the lodge at this time then that will help to trace her and fill in my family tree.

On the 1901 census at Loungard House, Kintail, Ross & Cromarty are: John Boa 38, Barbara Boa 35, Hugh 12, Christina 10, William 5, Margaret 3 and Peter 1

Are these the ones you are looking for?

Fiona,  I found my copy of "The Long Horizon" a good photo of the Boa's at Longard, John & Barbara and a big family, also John aged 80 on top of Ben Wyvis. They descended from a James Boa who came North from Ettrick to Glen Affric with the sheep and married a Margaret MacRae, they lived at Camban, now a bothy looked after by the Mountain Bothies Association (try their website for bothy photo) very remote-never been, tried once but couldn't get over the river. There's a wee Boa pedigree in the book, this is a "must have" for you, ISBN 0 9536695 0 5, available from the author Iain R Thomson, Cruinassie, Breakachie, Beauly, IV 7AE,   http://www.strathglass.co.uk  around £16, tell him you're off the Boa's and you might get a discount. Great character Iain Thomson, he used to have a programme on the wireless, undoubtedly he'll have more information on the family than appears in the book. All The Best....Skoosh.

Fionna, an interesting thing, the Boa's lived in Ettrick at a place called Phawhope, very high up, 1500 ft? if you check the MBA website, Over Phawhope is also one of their bothies.

Hi,
No he moved away. If I remember correctly he's a Marine Biologist. (may be on the net somewhere).  I think the family still live in Inverness.  Maybe in the phone book.  I don't know many folk back home now but I could try.
Will be back......

Fiona,  you might get the book cheaper in paperback. I've stayed at Over Phawhope a few times, you can almost drive to the door. The Gaelic Mod is on at Inverness this week, there was a young fella Boa on singing,  all the best......Skoosh.
