Presbyterian Church, Parish of Bothwell?
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 09:05 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out, on behalf of a friend, if the church where his ancestor was married is still standing. The church in question is "Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Parish of Bothwell". The marriage took place in December 1849. Can anyone please tell me the likely location of this church and if it still exists, perhaps under a differrent name?

Bothwell was a big parish with several villages, each with its own church. Do you have any idea of the location within the parish?
Very often, depending the social status, people were married in their own homes by the minister of the parish church, usually on a Saturday evening. Church weddings were for those who had a bit of money, not always the case with the ordinary working class.

Hi Lodger, thanks,

The info I have shows the marriage was on a Sunday. I will try and find out if there is more detail available on the actual village where the church was.

p.s. did you recieve the PM I sent you on Monday re-Cambusnethan Cemetery map/lair positions?

Do you have their address?

Have you got them on the 1851 census?

Do you know what age he was when he married. Possible 1851 census entry for James and Mary Kennedy

You can view the above census images on SP and they will show James and Mary's place of birth which may narrow down the church

Bothwell Parish Church maybe?

"Scotlands oldest collegiate church still in use for worship and dedicated to St Bride, occupies the site of a former 6th-century church. Medieval choir. Nave and tower 1833, David Hamilton, altered 1933. Monuments to the Earls of Douglas and the Duke of Hamilton. Stained glass by Gordon Webster, Douglas Strachan and Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Fascinating tales of an outstanding royal wedding and link with Bothwell Castle. Graveyard. Off A725 near Hamilton."

Looks like it could be the nearest church to Chapelhall, not sure if it had one at that time but Holytown did, and that was only a couple of miles away.  Bothwell parish church was much further away. The 1855 birth certificate should tell you the date and place of the marriage (but it may be where you found the "Parish church Bothwell" info) it should also give the parents ages and places of birth. If they were both local people, and by that I mean Lanarkshire or thereabouts, it would be likely that they were married in the bride's parish.
So follow Sancti's advice and find the bride's birthplace.

Hello Canisp and Lodger.

I have looked out my copy of Holytown Parish Church's 150 year anniversary, publication.

The church was established 1837.

Hope that this is of some use to you.
