Trenant Chapel ?
« on: Sunday 06 March 05 10:21 GMT (UK) »

Hi Guys could someone tell me where this chapel is please : Trenant Chapel.

I'm trying to locate some Bible christians and they were baptised at the above chapel.

The family are from St Neot.

Here is a paragraph from the Nonconformist register

12 July 1827 Thomas son of Thomas MALLETT of St Neot (Yeoman) and Mary
his wife, who was the daughter of Joseph and Martha Davey was born 1
July 1827 and baptized at Trenant Chapel in the parish aforesaid by
William Courtice.

Is this chapel in Liskeard?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Trenant is a small settlement above the river Fowey about 2 miles east of St. Neot.  St Neot is a different parish to Liskeard, the village is situated 5 or 6 miles north west of Liskeard.  Tranent is on OS map 201, grid reference SX212686 - or there abouts.

If you go to the old maps site:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk

Search for St Neots in Cornwall.  Then click the east arrow a couple of times and the north arrow once  (I think) then Tranent - Higher and Lower comes into the frame.  Zoom in in Lower Tranent - the Bible Christian Chapel is marked near the bridge at Lower Tranent .

Good luck

Sorry Paul, I use that site a lot and so know some of the short cuts.  Wherever you click on the map, it re-centreson that point.  So if you click right at the edge, you go further than just by using the arrows.  That must have been what I did.  Undecided

Hi again Nell

Here is just a thought.  Parish chest offer burials on CD rom from 1837 I think to 1900 at Trenant.  If the chapel is not there anymore is there some sort of graveyard?

There must have been a lot of people buried there.

Here is the parish chest cd rom

Liskeard Primitive Methodist Circuit

Baptisms  1856  -  1900

Greenbank  Chapel  Baptisms  1870  -  1900

Trenant  Chapel  Burials  1843  -  1900

Areas  include:  Liskeard,  Menheniot,  Callington,  St  Cleer,  Calstock,  Lezant,  Linkinhorne,  St  Ive,  Landrake.

If this is the correct chapel then it might be worth buying.  But when did this chapel ceast to exist?

I just noticed this post..  I live in Liskeard and can confirm that

a) The chapel is still there, though is now a private house/campsite.

b) There is a graveyard attached on the side of the chapel with quite  a number of graves.

There are pictures of St Neot churches online
Here is one labelled MEthodist Church ??right one or not
http://www.cornwall.netfirms.com/stneots/pages/Methodist%20Chapel.htm
If you check with Steve (link on page) he will be able to clarify which one it is
