Hi Doughy,
I don't know where you are in relation to Brighton, but they are doing a "pub tour" in the History Centre ...
BRIGHTON HISTORY CENTRE OFFERS A PUB CRAWL THROUGH TIME The pub has remained a pillar of British social life over the years and Brighton Boozers, on at Brighton History Centre until December 17 2005, tells the story of the city’s hostelries. Much of the research was taken from the centre’s archives, "from things like press cuttings and collections of old photographs, with a lot of help from local publicans and local people," says the history centre’s Sally Blann. "Public houses and taverns in Brighton have played a large part in Brighton’s history." at: http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/exh_gfx_en/ART25757.html
The article includes addresses and tel. numbers if you want to contact them.

I was lucky enough to to visit to exhibition about two weeks ago... It was very interesting. I certainly recommend contacting the Local History Centre, as Bob suggested, as I am sure they would be more than happy to help you out.

As if there aren't already enough reasons to visit Brighton... But both a virtual tour of the history of the pub in Brighton, and then obviously a subsequent tour of the real things in the evening sounds too tempting to avoid in the very near future... But I too have heard excellent reports of their (fairly recently set up) Family History Centre in the town... Keith p.s. Haven't been able to find out much yet about Kemp Town Brewery, so if anyone has any more info. on it, I'd be very happy to hear it...

Hi douhgy,
I'm not sure if this is too late but I have a letter from Tamplin & Son, Lewes Road Brighton, dated Feb. 2nd 1883 ( it was caled Phoenix Brewery at that time ) . It was sent to my Great grandfather outlining the terms and rates for the employment and training for his son who was to be apprenticed as a Cooper at Tamplings for 5 years. He was to be paid 7 shilling per week, out of that he was to pay his head Cooper the sum of 2 shillings per week to teach him the trade. So his starting wage would be 5 shillings per week.

East Sussex Records Office have Tamplins Archives (and most of the other brewers) Go to http://www.a2a.org.uk/ select "search these catalogues" then extended search , East Sussex and at the bottom in "Archive Category" search "Business". Pete

Tamplins Brewery was not in Kemp Town but opposite St Peters Church in the area know as The Level, in the Lewes Road. Fortunately, I worked for the Kemp Town Brewery which was in Kemp Town. There was much rivalry between employees of the two breweries during the fifties and sixties.

Hello Keith, About the only thing I have of any use, to some people at least is, memories. If any of my old! workmates are reading this, please get in touch. I was a drayman for eight or nine years before being promoted. Charringtons, the parent company, shut down the brewing side and moved KTB to Newhaven, where it ceased to be KTB and became Charringtons Brewery and later Bass Charrington. I understand from a publican acquaintance, after yet another brewery takeover they moved to Crawley from Newhaven. Ron.

Triron, Those personal memories are so important, and must if possible be passed on. How often have we gazed at pages of the Census or certificates of Birth, Death and Marriage and muttered: "If only they could tell me what I'd like to know" I think people are advised when first starting out on gathering info on their family tree to go and talk to and interview their elderly relatives, who if questioned in the right way can reveal a veritable goldmine of information that has not been written down anywhere else... keith

Hello Keith, Quite so. It is only when some-one requires information that our time learned knowledge becomes useful. When knowledge is offered to the younger generation it is often rejected as being boring. These pages are great for discussion and learning, how on earth did we manage when I was a lad? Be happy. Ron
