Jacob Hutchinson 1767- Allendale
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 14:37 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in the origins of Jacob. All the trees I have seen to date suggest he was the son of Jacob and Eleanor of Hollin Close, Allendale. I have now come across the following in Parish Records for Allendale St Cuthbert 1767.
Jacob H son of Jacob and Eleanor Sinderhop 1st. Jan 1767  and
Jacob H son of Christopher and Anne Brodegate Head  30th. March 1767.
I have other parish record information which may support the idea that Jacob was in fact the son of Christopher and Anne. He may have had a sister Sarah.
Does anyone have any further support for my hypothesis?

Hi Tom

Welcome to rootschat.

I've had a similar situation in another parish and there really isn't any way to tell unless you can find cast iron information to select one or the other.

Keep an open mind - follow the parish records for both of them - see if one perhaps dies etc. etc.

Hi Christine

Thanks for the advice. I'm on the case, just discovering the problems of false trails and giant leaps of faith involved.

Best wishes

It can be a bit of a minefield.  This 'three pieces of good evidence' only really applies to the times of census and civil registration.  Once you get to the point of having to rely on church records alone it does get more difficult.

You could also look to see if there is a naming pattern for Jacob's children - is his first born son called Jacob or Christopher?  It's not a guarantee but traditional naming patterns were used more back then.
