Hi, Humphrey Smale (b1815 in Devon) and his wife Susan disappear from the English Censuses during 1871 & 1881. His son Jethro Smale and his wife Fanny arrive in Wellington in 1876 aboard the Waipa from the UK and I'm wondering if Humphrey and Susan are there too. I have trawled through passenger lists that I can find with no luck, and I wondered if anyone has any ideas . Are there any censuses in NZ and if so are they available online? In 1881 Jethro has reappeared and is a policeman in Greenwich. Humphrey reappears in 1991 in Penge, Surrey (outskirts of London - about 20 miles away). A co-incidence? Or did they emigrate together and Humphrey stayed longer? Any thoughts gratefully received. Sunic

Hi Sunic,
Have you considered the possibility that they migrated to Australia - there's some Smale arrivals to NSW in that era ...
here's the link to the NSW state records ...
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/keyname_search.asp
I noticed there's index references for SMALE ...
Cheers, JM

Hi Sunic,
I cannot see where you have a date for Humphrey's death, so please bear with me on this....
There's a possible arrival in Sydney New South Wales, AUSTRALIA from LONDON, for a Mr H Smale and R ROSS, arriving 19 Oct 1896 on the Oruba. If this is your chap, then he would be quite old (born ca 1815).... I don't know if R ROSS was male or female, and no occupation given either... and of course, no indication as to their intentions, their ages etc ... I would not expect to find that type of detail on unassisted passenger lists into Australia ...
I'm sure you now realise that you won't find any Aussie Census records, those records were generally destroyed after the statistics were collected each time from around mid 19th Century until very recently....
Cheers, Good Luck with your researchings on the various RChatter boards,
JM

The above of course, veers from the question being asked in this thread, however a check of another source, reveals "Mr H. SMALE - arriving Sydney 1896" to be "a Henry SMALE - born 1872".
