I am looking for baptism records for my grandfather and his 2 brothers. William Rathbone born abt 1884. George abt 1886 and Charles abt 1889. Also their mother Clara Stuart [or Stewart] who was born between 1860 and 1864. She lived common law with her husband George and didn't register any of her children's births so I am hoping that they were baptized instead.

Thank you Pauline. The only information I have is from the 1891 census where it states that Clara was born in Woolwich in 1864. however when she died in 1901 her death certificate said she was 41. They also had 2 other children Louisa born 1895 and John 1899. but I think they would have been born in Camberwell not Woolwich. Does the information you have show the parents?

Unfortunately. That is all the information I have. In 1901 George snr was a patient in Camberwell infirmary. Clara died 5 March 1901. I found John and Louisa in different scattered homes in Camberwell, but I haven't managed to find George or Charles since then. Even the house that Clara died in was empty and not mentioned in the census. William was in the army in Africa so he's no help! This is why I was really hoping that the 3 older boys had been baptized in Woolwich. I appreciate you taking time to look for me. the 1891 census copy I have RG12-463-108 reads George London Walworth. clara ditto Woolwich. Wm ditto- ditto...George London ditto........Charles ditto--ditto. Am I misinterpreting?

Hello, Casalguidi.. The birth certificate states. 21st October 1887 5 Reeds Buildings----Charles Rathbone-------Boy---George Stuart---Ellen Stuart formally Sullivan----- Labourer Laboratory Arsenal-----Kate Sullivan. In charge of the child.16 Melrose Place Woolwich---------.21st December 1887. The date of birth matches with the Charles Rathbone baptized in 1889. Would the baptism register have the fathers occupation? The 1891 census states George was a Wash Laundry man. Address " P something" Terrace Camberwell. The name Stuart comes from family memory.[ I will have to check if it is provable] Of the 11 kids my grandfather sired there was an Ellen, but no Clara, I wonder if this is a coincidence? This is getting odder! Why would the sister be in charge of the baby? and registered 2months after the birth? comments appreciated.

Christ Church, Camberwell 1 Oct 1889
Charles son of George & Clara RATHBONE of 50 Ruby Street, lab (PB) born 21 Oct 1887 Annie dau of George & Clara RATHBONE of 50 Ruby Street, lab born 17 Feb 1889
I wonder why Charles was baptised privately? Of course it could just be because he was a toddler rather than a baby
It certainly needs some unravelling

Thankyou for finding this information. Annie would explain the gap. It is really the Woolwich baptisms that I am interested in. I want to confirm who William's mother was. At the moment I am puzzled re Ellen, Clara- Sullivan- Stuart. I think I may have to think how it could all fit together. It certainly is a puzzle!
