Saving FTM 2005 details, help, please. *COMPLETED, many thanks*
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 22:16 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping that someone can advise me in very simple (untechnical!) terms how to save my family tree details from my FTM 2005 programme onto a memory stick.  I am becoming increasingly paranoid about the possibility of my computer deciding to have a laugh at my expense and crashing with the loss of all my records and months (probably years actually  Shocked)  of hard work - and a huge input from wonderfully kind people on this website too, I must add!!  Wink

I have saved 'Backups' which look like a code to me (very untechnical you see!!)  but can't believe it's that simple.  Do I now need to save the Backups onto the memory stick or is there more to it than that?

Hope someone can help and put my mind at ease,
KateW.

FTM uses database technology, which means it saves data all the time  you have the program open.  It automatically makes a backup when you close the program down so there are two copies of the database file:

filename.FTW (main database file)
filename.FBK (backup of the database file)

If you want to make a manual backup to a different drive, then you can do this easily by clicking on File >> Backup.

You then select your memory stick drive.

downside,
Thanks for your reply.

I have tried to make a manual backup following your instructions.  I clicked file - backup and then chose 'G' drive which is the memory stick in USB port.  It came up with the message 'There is data on this floppy. Please insert a blank formatted floppy in it's place'   The memory stick is a new 8GB one which I bought for this purpose and thought was plenty of space.  Why is it telling me it's a 'floppy'?

Any ideas what I should try now?
Thanks,
KateW.

Plan B.

Copy your filename.FTW file to your memory stick.

You probably do not know where your database file resides on disk so ...

Click on Start >> Search >> For Files or Folders

In the search box type: *.ftw

That was an asterisk + a dot + the letters FTW.

Once it has been found, right click on it and select Send to and select your memory stick.

Out of interest, I managed to make a manual backup using my external hard drive without any problems.  However, it created a filename.FBC file which is a compressed version of the database file.

Hi downside,

Brilliant. Plan B worked!  Wink  Thank you very much for your help - it is really appreciated.  My ancestors are safely on my memory stick.  Grin Grin
Now, I have another question.  As I add more info to my Family Tree Maker programme how should I save it onto the memory stick?  Will it just add any new info over what I just saved if I follow the same instructions?  Huh

Thanks,
KateW.

Hi, KateW,

Yes, you can do that.

Windows will probably tell you that a file of that name already exists, and ask if you want to replace it.

If you're sure that the new file is the one you want to keep, just click "Yes".
