Swanage stonemasons
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 17:47 UTC (UK) »

I`m looking at the Linington family on the 1851 census in Swanage district 2a, page21.  They, and most of the families in that district appear to be stonemasons.  I`m not familiar with the area myself so can anyone explain why this was so?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi Jane K,

Purbeck stone.  If you go to the Swanage page on the Dorset OPC site :

http://www.opcdorset.com

Scroll down (almost at the end) and there is a list of Purbeck stone mines.

Lots of other Swanage info available; parish registers, directories, maps, MIs, etc.

Hope you find something useful.
