Sorry Christine on Martha's Cert. It reads Ellen Sutcliffe formerly Hartley.  I've got Mary Hartley on the brain.
Just to confuse the matter I found a Mary Hartley married a Benjamin Haigh in Almondbury 15 Aug 1831.  This was somehow attached to the 1881 Cencus with Godfrey Berry.  If you think this is confusing Squire Abraham Sutcliffe was born A.S.Wood and raised as a child by his paternal grandmother and later took the Surname of HIS mother Sarah Sutcliffe in his late teens!

John,
I hunted around and found another address for Steven Whitwam  http://whitwam.co.uk/phpautomembersarea/members/ and I have sent him a request.
Today I finally received the Birth Certificate I applied for and of course it is the wrong one.  Mother's name is Elizabeth Noble and Father Henry Berry living at 67 Marsh Street Huddersfield.
I'll have to give the hunt a rest for a while and start up again.
Thanks for all the help from you and others.

Sorry for not getting back to you before.

It certainly seems a mystery.

As I said earlier can't find either an Ellen Berry or Ellen Hartley to match up with the details you have on the marriage cert.

What was the address given for them in Kirkheaton on the marriage cert?

That doesn't help at all does it, thought we may be able to find the address in previous census.

I've checked again but can't find her either as Berry or Hartley.

Thanks Christine for your email.  When you say you have checked again does that mean 1851 or 1861.
Interestly enough I have found out that the Birth Cert. I have for Harry Sutcliffe who is Ellens 1st son and second child.  is not the right one.  It is another  Harry Sutcliffe, father Abraham Sutcliffe and Mother Ellen Lee (as she couldn't write I thought it had been Hartley transcribed incorrectly....she had signed with an "X" and he was born at Lepton  5th September 1869.  He must have died shortly after as he is not on the census with his parents in 1871.  MY Harry Sutcliffe was born about 7th December 1868 in Lindley Huddersfield although his family lived at 122 Cowcliffe his parents were Squire Abraham Sutcliffe and Ellen Surtcliffe (Hartley)...shown in 1871 Census.
Even more confusing eh!  Still living at Cowcliffe in 1881 Census.
Will keep you informed.

I have checked both 1851 and 1861.

Could this be the birth reg for your Harry, a year earlier?

Birth  Dec 1867

Sutcliffe  Harry     Huddersfield  9a 305

It may be worth applying for the cert giving Squire Sutcliffe as checking point for father to see what the mmn is given as.

It appears the other Harry died as there is a death reg and also a marriage forabraham Sutcliffe to Ellen Lee.

THANKYOU!!  He died 23June 1930 aged 61 years 6mths and 16 days.  So that seems right.  On 1871 Census he is stated to be 2 years old which put  me off a bit.
Will apply today and keep in touch.  Last certificate I applied for took a while.

I agree it seems a year too early but it's worth the try.

Well Christine, John and all those that replied I still haven't found a birth for Harry Sutcliffe son of Squire Abraham Sutcliffe and Mary Hartley supposedly born in Lindley .I applied for a birth certofocate for a Harry Sutcliffe in December Qtr 1867 although it appeared to be a year too early.  I have received notice today from GRO stating that the father of the one I applied for was not Squire Abraham Sutcliffe and have refunded half the fee.
Thankyou for all those who have tied to help.

Hi Mama,

Could this be your grandfather's birth reg?  Many Henry's are known as Harry.

Henry Sutcliffe, 1st qrt, 1869, Huddersfield, vol 9a page 369.
