Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB4.0
« on: Monday 28 September 09 10:48 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Anybody know what it is?

I've just bought a baptism CD from a FHS and have downloaded the 'viewer' okay. However, when I double click on the viewer icon I get this message:

"Error opening Baptism OLE connection. The 'Microsoft.jet.OLEDB4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine."

Eh? (sorry - no comprendez!).  Embarrassed

My PC is only about 2 months old, so does anyone know what it is I'm missing? (apart from a computer brain, of course!).

I'd welcome any help. Indeed, I would!  Roll Eyes

Sort of comprehend.

OLE = Object Linking and Embedding

A simple example.
If you have a Word document and an Excel spreasheet and you want to put a table into a Word document from Excel then you can either embed it or you can link it.  If you embed it then you copy and paste into the Word document and the data remains static but if you link it then the data is dynamic and updates itself each time you open the Word document.  Microsoft Access also uses the this method as well.

In order to connect two documents together like this means you require a bit of software called a Jet.

Have a read of this and see if it is of any help:

It suggests that, as I'm running Vista Home Premium, I should have some form of this already but I did what the link you gave me suggests and did a search for it, and nothing is coming up.

So it looks as if I need to download it from scratch. Problem is that none of the available 5 downloads are for Vista!

Any ideas? I'll try googling and see if there any downloads available elsewhere.

I've found that a lot of things which are installed as standard on XP have to be enabled on Vista.

Try doing this:

Start >> Run and in the box type this:

regsvr32 Msjet40.dll

and press OK.

This should register the module and put an entry in Windows registry.

Hi Downside,

Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. It just says it failed to load or to check I've typed the correct name. I did it a few times, so am sure I did type it correctly.

I have now actually found that I do have this on my system - I don't understand the technicalities of why, but it appears it just need 'registering' and therein lies the problem.

All this just to run one CD!!  Roll Eyes

Hi Jill

That is why I made my last suggestion.  Try again, just highlight the text below and press Ctrl + C to copy the text and then in the run dialog box press Ctrl + V to paste the text.

regsvr32 Msjet40.dll

Alternatively You can right click the highlighted text and select Copy and then right click in the Run dialog box and select Paste.

Hi again.

Did that - this is the message I get in a small window.

"RegSvr32

The module "Msjet40.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specific path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.

The specific module could not be found."

Am I typing it into the right box? You said 'Start >>Run then type in box. My system (Vista Home Premium) has the usual MS globe 'start' at bottom left of screen but when I click on that, I don't see 'Run', so I searched for 'run' in the start search box and then clicked on the Run programe and typed what you said in the resultant box. The above message then appears.  Huh

Sorry - I hate being so ignorant about all thing computer, so thanks for your patience.

The file should be stored in:

C:\Windows\System32

If your msjet40.dll and msjetOLEDB40.dll files are in a different location then you should copy them to the folder C:\Windows\System32.

You can run commands from a DOS screen.

Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt

Also make sure that you logged in as the Administrator or have administrator priveleges when you register the file(s).

You may have to ask FHS support about this problem.  I am sure other people have had this problem so it may be best to ask them about it as we are going around in circles at the moment.

Thanks for your patience, downside.

I've already tried the FHS. The chap tried a few suggestions which either didn't work or I couldn't follow - he seems to have given up on me now - who can blame him, though I am cross at them for not mentioning this prog necessity before I bought the CD. As I said, I've had lots of CDs from lots of FHSs and never come across this before.

I'll try to get some help locally - if not, I'll have to return the CD.

Thanks again for your help.

Apparently I'm not the only one having trouble with this Notts CD and it's because I have a 64 bit version of Vista.

A computer literate friend has tried to help and managed to move msjet40.dll and msjetOLEDB40.dll to a folder called C:\Windows\syswow64 and then tried the RegSvr32 thing - but no luck, same message.

The chap at Notts FHS is trying to do some testing (I suppose it'll be an ongoing problem for their sales). Until anything else comes to light, the problem remains.

Finding suitable drivers for anything will always be a challenge when you have the 64-bit version of any OS  Shocked
