Totally stumped, help needed please
« on: Monday 28 September 09 14:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Totally stumped here, regarding a name.

My Great Grandmothers parents, John Barron and Ann Byrne, were both born in Ireland, I know John Barron was brn in Strabane, not sure about area Ann was born in.  Ann's parents were William Byrne and D? Kowlie.  It's the mothers name we are stumped on.  On Ann's death certificate, 1866 death, in Edinburgh, the christian name looks like it starts with a D, and we are 95% sure Kowlie is the surname.

I would appreciate it if someone could look for a marriage between a William Byrne and a Kowlie for me.  Ann was born around 1838 in Ireland, so I am assuming the marriage would be before that.

Any help would be much appreciated, as I know my cousin cannot make it out, and Kowlie is on someone elses tree in Anc and they can't make it out either, neither can anyone who has looked at it in the Deciphering thread on here.

Thanks Caz xx

Unfortunately Irish civil registration started in 1864 for Catholic marriage and from 1845 for other marriages- both dates too late to find a marriage for Ann Byrne's parents.
For dates earlier than civil registration you need to search for church records, which may or may not exist, but to do so you need to know both religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) and then check if such records exist.
Searching for an 'Kowlie' entries in 'Ireland' on www.familysearch.org bring up lots of variations. LDS Pilot site also has index to Irish civil registrations but a search for 'kowlie' there brings up no matches.

Have you tried Cowley?

Maybe something on 1911 Irish census might connect to any information you have, townland etc. possible relatives if you just put in Cowley and select the county. Yours may be all dead by then but possible descendants could be revealed!

It's worth a try!
