FRIARY / FRIERY
« on: Monday 28 September 09 14:41 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to chip away at this brick wall!! and any help will be much appreciated.  My ggrandmother Bridget Friary seems to be a bit of a mystery.

Patrick Friary born Longford Ireland 1879. He and his mother Bridget Friary went to live in Scotland sometime after 1879.

Bridget Friary then married James Brown in 1900
Marriage details:
St. Ignatius Church Wishaw Scotland. 25/5/1900
Bridget Friary, Marshall St. Wishaw. occ. Laundress.
father: Edward Friary
mother: Bridget (Boylan) - both deceased

James Brown, Lower Main Street, Wishaw. occ. Plasterers labourer
father: John Brown
mother: Elenor (Mc Dermott)

Witness: Patrick Fox & Elizabeth Casey

Patrick Friary married in Longford Ireland in 1904 and James & Bridget (friary) Brown returned to  live in Longford circa1927

I am trying to find out if Bridget went to stay with relatives in Scotland and if so what family connection is there in Scotland?
Did Patrick stay in Scotland with his mother?  The only record of him in Ireland is his birth 1879, marriage1904, and is listed in 1911 census Longford.
Family lore says Patrick Friary was in the army -  'The Leinsters'
Can anyone guide me to finding information on all this?

I can't see Bridget and Patrick together on any Scottish census.

In 1901 James Brown and Bridget are living in 6 Bells Rows, Alexander St Wishaw

Both showing as born Ireland

Bridget's age given as 37

Thank you so much for taking the time.

This Bridget deducted years on her marriage cert also.  I wonder where she met James Brown? because I presumed he was from Scotland. I remember being told he had a great Scottish accent.

Bridget came back to Ireland around 1890 for her mothers funeral.  When she went back to Scotland she brought 4 of her brother's children with her.  As far as I know the children never returned to Ireland.  Can you tell me if there are children listed with her on the 1911 census.?

If her son Patrick was not with her in Bells Rows then I will turn my search for him back to Longford.
thanks again

From the transcript for 1901, this is the full entry for the household that Sancti found earlier:

James Brown 40, general lab.,  b. Ireland
Bridget Brown 37 b. Ireland

Address: 6 Bells Row, Wishaw, Cambusnethan

Eileen, what were the names and birth years of Bridget's nephews/nieces that she brought over with her to see if we can find them on the census.

Hi Monica

I discounted the Holytown record due to Bridget's age ( forgot what women were like with ages  Tongue) and the marriage location. I didn't check to see it Patrick was alone on any census

That Holytown entry was my Ooops error post earlier - which I then deleted!

I cannot see any Fria* or Frie* entries for Patrick (or even searching as Peter) on the transcripts. Also can't see any young children that could connect as yet. Maybe they came over after 1901?

Thank you so much for your help.

I only have 2 of the childrens names:
Joseph born 22nd May 1895
John Patrick born 15th February  1891

Looking at these dates of birth, it had to have been after 1895 when she brought the children to Scotland but hopefully before the 1901 census.

I can't see any of those 2 on the 1891 census

On the marriage certificate for James Brown is he a widower?

Did James and Bridget die in Scotland or Ireland?

James was bachelor
Bridget - spinster

Bridget and James returned to Longford circa 1927 and Bridget is buried in  Longford but I have no information on  James.
