This is a really big ask, can anybody else help ?
« on: Monday 28 September 09 17:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I have the marriage of my great aunt, Nellie Worsley b: Manchester England abt 1891 to Robert Ball in Vancouver in 1920 but, on her brothers' obituary in 1950 she is now Mrs N Ratcliffe. If possible I would like any information on  Roberts' death ( or they could have divorced ?) and Nellies new marriage.  Her parents were James Worsley and Hannah Parks both from England.
Also and this if being really cheeky I know.
James B Worsley ( Nellies brother ) m: Amy Burden in 1914 in Vancouver any infor regarding any children, on his obituary, daughters are named as Mrs H Pihl from Vancouver and Mrs L Elgood from James Island.
Any help would be fab xx

Hi Debbie,

There is an entry in the BC Archives index (http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-16CC77E/gbsearch#form) that matches Nellie's death:

Nellie Ratcliffe
Died Vancouver
22 Aug 1965, aged 75
Film - B13273
Reg - 1965-09-011664

There are numerous possible deaths for Robert Ball.  Do you have a copy of their 1920 marriage certificate?  If they were divorced later, a note was usually added to the marriage registration stating when and where they were divorced.  Otherwise, Robert's age and estimated year of birth will help you narrow down the possibilities for his death and post the relevant details from the Vital Events Index.

If you can't find the deaths in the Index, you could try the online obituaries.  Rootsweb has obits from 2000 onwards (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/CAN-BC-OBITS) and the main Vancouver newspapers are online from 2002 (http://classifieds.canada.com/vancouver/archives/index.aspx?cls_id=37913&goback=30).  That just leaves a gap of about ten years between the indexes and the online obits.

I'm afraid I can't do any lookups right now as I am just off on vacation but I am sure others in BC will help once you have narrowed down the possible registrations.

Lynwen

well, there aren't that many Pihl families listed in B.C. One in Vancouver and another dozen within the Province
Drop a line to a few of them, you never know

You always have to go with the little clues as BC births and marriages for the children of James Worsley are protected  under privacy laws.

A daughter was married to L. Elgood.  From this link
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-E30F64/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths
search for Elgood and under deaths you find a reference to Lloyd Burton Elgood's death and an online google reveals he is buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery, Fraser Valley, BC born 1921 d. Jan 17 1982
A possibility

Searching BC Obituaries from this link http://www.bcgs.ca/BC-Newspapers-Obituaries.htm
under Elgood you find an obituary for Marjorie Elgood, wife of Lloyd and sister of Nellie Pihl.  Link below.

Hi Debbie,

Not sure if you still need this but I looked up Nellie's marriage and death registration.

Robert Ball was a 45yr old widower when they married.  His occupation was Agent, lived at 810 16th Ave and was born in Shevington, Lancs to Edward Ball and Sarah Read.  His father was a farmer.

Nellie was 28, a spinster, employed as a machinist and lived at Suite 7 Ryan Court at 10th and Ontario in Vancouver.  Father James Worsley, mother Hannah Parks.  They were married at St Michael's Anglican Church (which is very close to her residence) on 3 Jun 1920 at 2:30pm (the vicar was very specific!)  There was no note relating to a divorce so I assume Robert died.

Nellie died at Vancouver General Hospital.  Her usual address was 2568 Cambridge Street, Vancouver.  She lived in the city 46yrs, the municipality 46yrs and the province 46 years before her death.  She was married to Harry Ratcliffe, born in Manchester 8 Jun 1890.  Parents as listed above.  She was cremated and her husband acted as the informant.  She died of acute left ventricle failure.  Contributing cause was colon cancer.  She had surgery related to the cancer 11 days before she died.

Regards,
Lynwen

Hi Lynwen,
This information is fantastic as I have only this week made contact with a granson  (in Kelowna,) of James Bertram Worsley (Nellies' brother). He has very little information about the Uk Worsleys' going over to Canada so, between us we are trying to fill in the gaps.

Thank you so much for looking this up for me, it is much appreciated.
