Hi there. I seem to have hit a brick wall with one branch of my family - John CAVANAGH born circa 1859 in Easington, Co Durham. He appears on the 1861 Census with the rest of his family f John b 1829 and m Margaret b 1825 both from Ireland. However they all seem to disappear after that!
He surfaces again in 1884 when he marries Catherine Owens in Easington and is then on all the subsequent censuses!!!
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I find where they have gone? I have tried looking for neighbours but that has not brought any result. I have checked the Scottish censuses for those years as well. Run out of ideas now so any suggestions gratefully received!!

It's a complete mystery to me where they have gone to for those years. When he marries it is in Easington and then stays there.

I don't know if your John Cavenaugh is the one living in Murton on the 1861 census, if so the same family apeears on the 1870 Us census living in Jefferson Illinois.John Sr and Margaret are a bit older than the 61 census suggests but the rest of the family is all there.

My great Gran was Ann Cavanagh, she had sisters Elizabeth, Ellen, and bothers Patrick, John and Edward. I have them as living in Sunderlands east end in 1881. Both Ann and Elizabeth married from there in St Patricks church. I had not been able to trace the men or the sister Ellen.However I have now found out the Ellen was in service in Castle Eden in Monk Hesledon Farm House in 1881.
Patrick married in Easington in 1878, John married in Casle Eden in 1884 but I havnt anymore information on Edward.Is there anyone related to these families.
The Parents of this family were Edward and Elizabeth and they were both born in Ireland in the 1830s. Many Thanks from Ann in Australia

Ann again from Australia, checking the marriages for thre Cavanagh family and IF !! they are my G Grans siblings. It appears that Patrick married Margaret Brock in 1878
John married jane Mc Ardle of Catherine Owens in 1884
Ellen married Michael Mc Anaeney in 1886. regards to all from Ann

I don't think we are related as my John Cavanagh had two brothers and one sister: Francis Cavanagh 1849 – Thomas Cavanagh 1852 – Hannah Cavanagh 1854. The whole family went to the US after the 1861 Census as they are recorded as being in Indiana in 1870. Hannah married a Patrick Ansbro and somewhere along the line John returned to the UK and married my GG Grandmother in Easington.
The parents stayed in the US as far as I can see but not sure about the brothers. They were still in Indiana in 1880.
Where are you in Australia?

Massage for Jackie, We are at Banora Point at Tweed Heads.Guess i will have to go on searching for the Cavanaghs. A friend said that he thought that they came from Ireland to Easington, then moved to Sunderland. 2 of them married in Sunderland and the rest went back to Easington.I just wished I had asked more questions when I was a child. I'm trying now to find out when they went to the US and when John came back.
The parents were still there in 1880 living with the daughter and son in law. I haven't managed to find any of that family group after the 1880 census, so maybe they all came back to the UK. I don't have a full sub to Ancestry so will have to have a search when I get to my local Family History group as they do.

Hi Jackie, I used to go to the South Tweed HISTORICALSociety.Ducie Hood was the sectretary or something like that. she lives over the back fence to me.Mainly what Ive found out about both Mam and Dads family, I found out with the help of friends who know a a lot more about geneology then I do.It was my G Grans family that I was trying to find a bit out about. I couldnt find any marriages for them and it was a friend who said he thought the missing siblings had moved to Easington from Sunderland.
Are you from the Uk ? we came out here in 1975 but were in Sydney first, moving here 7 years ago.When I did my Dads family, that was a challenge as he was born on the wrong side of the blankets. all he knew was his Fathers Name. I found a huge skeleton in the cupboard there !!! Ann
