Hi,
Can anyone with Parish Register for Wilstead look for Thomas Valentine born about 1771 Cotton End/ Wilstead  or anyone with the Valentine surname

Cardington (of which Cotton End is a hamlet) and Wilstead  baptisms and marriages have been extracted onto the IGI at www.familysearch.org, so this is something that you can do yourself online.

Cotton End had many dissenters so if the family lived there it's possible he wasn't baptised in the established church

What else do you know about him? There were dissenter Valentine families in Cotton End in the 1782 census, but I can't see a Thomas born 1771

Thomas Valentine had a son William Valentine born about 1816 Eastcotts, he marriad Martha Neal and lived in Hawnes (Haynes) where they had a large family, two of his daughter emmigrated to Australia.

In 1841 William 20 was living in the same household as Thomas Valentine 70. A separate family in the same house was Joseph and Rebecca Witamore both 50. There’s a marriage in Cardington on 7 Jan 1807 between Thomas Valentine and Mary Whitamore, so it seems a reasonable assumption that this is your Thomas. But I can’t find a burial for Thomas after 1841, nor an earlier one for Mary. In fact there are no Valentine burials in Cardington parish church between 1806 and the end of the records on the NBI in 1852. Perhaps they were all buried in the Baptist churchyard, whose records aren’t on the NBI. However there is a death in Bedford registration district in the March quarter 1843 which might be him. The death cert will give you the age, which if it’s the right Thomas might help confirm his birth*.

The last Valentine baptism in Cardington in the period up to 1812 was in 1771, despite there being three Valentine families in Cotton End, all dissenters, in 1782. But post 1812 Cardington baptisms aren’t on the IGI. It would worth looking at the microfilm at BLARS in Borough Hall (used to be County Hall, down by the river)

But as I said in an earlier post, there’s no Thomas who appears in Cardington in 1782 who fits. I think you’ll have your work cut out with Thomas to get any further back. The Valentines were serious non-conformists! (As were my Thody family in Cotton End, one of whom married Elizabeth Valentine born c1810, who might have been** a sister of your William)

* What's bugging me is the fact that I can't see him in the 1782 census, when if his age in 1841 is correct he should have appeared. Which makes me question his age in 1841!

Many thanks for all the information, I think i will send for death cert of 1843 and see what it says. I curtainly seem to have problems what  with  Patrick White and now Thomas Valentine. Will let you no outcome of death cert.
