Cambridge Boro' Sessions
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 08:37 UTC (UK) »

I have found, through an Ancestry search a William VILLERS acquitted of Larceny on October 13 1849 at Cambs Boro Sessions. Can anyone tell me what the judicial procedure would have been? Would he have been imprisoned before the trial and if so, for how long? I have also found William Villers tried on 3 January 1850 and acquitted of simple larceny at Quarter Sessions held in Coventry. Are details of such trials kept or is it merely the record of sentencing or acquittal. I have a William Villiers born 1819 in Burton on Trent, on my family tree who, despite years of research cannot be located before the 1861 Census for Eynesbury, Hunts. He was a harnessmaker journeyman so it is a possibility it could be the same person. Any ideas?

If records of the trial survive they will most likely be in the National Archives, Kew

Hi Yvonne

I'd be tempted to send an email to Cambridge Records Office to see if they have any trial records. You might get a bit more detail of the offence, and details of the accused. Some quarter session extracts I've seen in Bedford and Huntingdon include evidence from witnesses etc

Thanks for the suggestion, David.
I have sent them an email and will hope for the best! If necessary I'll take a trip to Cambridge and look for myself.

If you check the catalogue at http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/catalogue/ Cambs quarter sessions, Hunts quarter sessions, Isle of Ely quarter sessions are all held at Cambridge/Huntingdon. That seemed a good place to start for Cambridge Borough Sessions, and if Cambridge Records Office doesn't hold them doubtless they'll point Yvonne in the right direction.

Depends where the trial was held for the Lincs murder

The Borough of Cambridge Sessions records are held at Cambridge but haven't been indexed yet

Thanks to you both. I'll let you know how I progress withtoy research! It will probably be a different William Villers if my luck in pursuit of William Villiers runs true to form. The great thing is not ot give up searching.

Yes please Yvonne, let us know what they come up with. I've spent a fair bit of time (not as much as you though!) trying to find the elusive William, so feel as though I have a personal interest in him.

David, The trial for the 1901 murder (Kirk of Boston) was held at Lincoln assizes, sentenced to death later reprieved through insanity.

The assizes dealt with the more serious cases that were referred to it by the quarter sessions. These seem to be held at TNA - see http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Research_Guide:_Assizes_-_Criminal_Trials#Assize_Records.2C_1559-1971

WILLIAM VILLERS/VILLERS Two local newsapares for 1849 report the trial for larceny. Unfortunately the age for the accused was 24, making him 6 years younger than the person I am researching. The reports are slightly conflicting !! One suggest he came from Liverpool and was a french polisher, the other a 'notorious cracksman from London'.In either case they do not seem to match William Villiers born 1819 , a harness maker from Burton on Trent. So my search for his antecedents continues.

Hi Yvonne

Pity, I was hoping you were going to get a serious lead from the trial

Back to the drawing board!

Good luck
