Holywell, transportation to
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 11:37 UTC (UK) »

To reach Holywell from Germany in 1905-1915, what would have been the most common and least expensive route?

Any ideas why a butchers daughter from Germany would travel and stay in  Holywell during that time? It seems a long way to go to conceal an unwanted pregnancy or to even just visit...

Thanks in advance to all who reply

i believe the route would have been ship to hull then rail to liverpool.  why divert to hollywell, not sure, unless for some reason the port of mostyn was used at this time!  it had expanded quite rapidly into a fair sized port by the middle of the 1800's.  perhaps from mostyn to liverpool where there was a largish german community

Hello Erna,

Some of my relatives in North Wales had origins in Germany. When some of us looked into this, we found that German emigration to England etc was common in the 19th century.

Many emigrants travelled from Hamburg to Hull. There was a good traffic of migrants through other ports as well.

There is a site http://www.progenealogists.com/germansengland.htm

I will see what other information we gathered when researching this and let you know.

My understanding is that the common route was via Hull and many Germans settled there. My relatives did before they moved to Llandudno.

Did your ancestor join other relatives, or friends, in Holywell perhaps?

Hello again,

I have found some of the messages and these mention the Anglo German Family History Society ( www.agfhs.co.uk) as being a good source for information.

The Public Records Office at Kew hold Naturalization Papers for German Nationals who settled in the UK. There is access to these via the internet. It is possible to get a photocopy of the papers too.

I can send a copy E-Mail with more details if you send an E-Mail address via PM.

Thank you for your kind attention and links.  As usual when doing genealogy, we are surrounded by language barriers, little known facts, rumors and dead ends. I am looking for my grandmother who died when my mother was 12; Mom is now 85.. All I know is that she spent some time in Holywell before WWI, met my Grandfather in England and then married him in Canada.
I just thought that travel from Germany to Wales would be expensive, not something that lower class families would have been able to afford...Also, I joined Ancestry and could not find her. I cannot find her in any shipping records, nor is she in IGI except marrying my GF. No records of her in Germany, either...
Anyways, sorry to babble
Have a good day and thanks again, you have been very helpful
