The GRO index doesn't show mother's maiden name before 1911 - you would need to buy the birth cert. (Parish registers at this time didn't normally give the mother's maiden name either.)
There are 2 or 3 birth registrations for a John ROBERTS in Shrewsbury c1867 - difficult to know which is the correct one! Richard Henry was easier... 
You can search a transcribed version of the GRO index free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
With common names like this (if/when funds permit) you really need a birth cert for one of the children to confirm Catherine's maiden name, then a marriage cert for Richard and Catherine to find out their fathers' names/occupations.
