Photo Software recommendations please.
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 15:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Hope this is the right board for this question.

Just wondered which photo software programme is the best.

There are so many different ones available.

I have Picasa 3 & Irfanview downloaded but as I still have a birthday present left ' in the bank ' I was considering buying a programme and would like Rootschatters personal views/recommendations before a possible purchase please.

cheers

Hi Barbara

I nearly always go for free software (freeware). Maybe it's my Yorkshire blood.  Grin

I can really strongly recommend PhotoFiltre. It doesn't have the layers though - but I rarely use those. It's probably because I don't know how to make best use of them !!

If you want all singing all dancing there's always the GIMP - but I've never really over come the learning curve there.

BTW have you seen the price of Photoshop? And they wonder why there are pirates about.

Hi Scottiedog,

Thanks for your comments.

I've been looking at the prices for Photoshop and the like - pretty scary in a way.

I think the programme is probably very good but would be more of value to people who are cleverer than I am when it comes to playing about with images etc.

On reflection I think I'll stick with Picasa 3 and Irfanview, I can do all that I'm capable of at this stage through them.

When I see what the Restorers on Rootschat can do, I realize that I'm still very much a novice.

Thanks again

Cheers

Hi Barbara  Smiley

Why don't you consider downloading The Gimp. I tend to stick with the ones that I mentioned on the other thread but I had a look at Gimp this week and it seems to do most of the things that PS Elements does and it's free  Smiley

I've tried and retried Gimp - and tried it again, but for some reason it just doesn't do it for me. I'm a dyed in the wool photoshop freak.
That said though it seems to me that the sensible thing to do is at least try the freebies (gimp in particular), if you feel then that it isn't for you give something like photoshop elements a go - it has most of what ever you would want out of it's big brother photoshop, but at a fraction of the cost - even the older versions are good and if you're lucky someone may even pass an old unused version on.

Hi Gadget & Denn,

Thank you both for your comments.

I've got to admit to having received a free CD of Gimp a few months ago, via my subscription to a certain consumer magazine.

At the time of receipt I installed it ( in one of my occasional wildly confident moods) and then tried to work my way through the machinations of it all.

Sad to say, I had to surrender & give up. I'm sure it's not the programme. it's my lack of expertise.

Since your posts I've tried to search out the CD again but it remains elusive - I've got so much 'stuff' now relating to family history that it's quite terrifying !!

This weekend I intend to try a more methodical search (instead of a frenzied panic attack) and see if I can locate the CD and have another go at it.

Thank you both again for your interest.

Cheers

Hi Barbara

You don't need the CD, you can download it from this site:

http://www.gimp.org/

I've not used it but it looked very much like the other packages in so far as the tools palette, layers windows, etc. were concerned.

It might be worth you having a word with Maggie and/or Paula who, I believe, both use it  Smiley

Hi Barbara,

I had a programme that came free with my pc about 8 years ago, it was called ulead express. It was easy to use but very limited. I used it on some more up to date photos with reasonable results.
Just recently I downloaded Gimp and it took a while to get used to but there are some useful video tutorials on line that can help. Try searching youtube for gimp.

good luck

Hi again Gadget,

Thanks for your reply and also for the web link to ' Gimp '

I've been giving it all some thought and I've decided to carry on for a while longer with the progs I've got, in the hope that I can do my image experimenting on them, with a view to downloading ' gimp ' at a later date.

Your input has helped me inasmuch as I might have gone & spent quite a bit of money on a new programme, only to find I couldn't cope with it.

I think I'll give myself a bit more time and then try the freebie..

I appreciate your interest.

For  jaytoot.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your comments.

As I've said to Gadget,I've decided to carry on for a while longer, with the fairly basic programmes I've got until I have more time to take on a different programme like ' gimp '.

It does sound as though it's a bit more complex than those I am I'm using at the moment so I'll try it at a later date.

Cheers and thanks again

Barbara..
