Help with French Relative
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 23:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone! My mother has recently started looking into her family tree.  She is stuck when she arrives at her Great Grandmother. (apparently my grandmother can't give the right information) The name we are having difficulty is Ellen Lufaye (not sure if that is how it is spelled). She was born in France, but don't know where. The little information we were given is that she died while giving birth to her daughter Virginia Rose Mirabella in Virginia (around 1904). Her spouse was Paul Mirabella, yet now we're hearing they might not have been married... If anyone has any advice I would love it!!

It is not really possible to look for someone in France unless you know where.

Do you have Paul and Virginia on any later censuses together?
Any idea where in Virginia Ellen's daughter was born (should look there for her death/cemetery info, also any possible relatives in the area).
Did Paul remarry? If so, does he list himself as a widower at that marriage?

Her surname could possibly have been Lafaye. Also, until you have some firm info on her birthplace consider that she may have been French-Canadian rather than French.

I believe Virginia Rose was born in Norfolk Virginia. Paul did remarry to a Marie. I'll have to check wth my mom on the answers to those questions. Apparently my grams family didn't really talk to one another and when they did, they made up stories! I'll check to get some more infor!

Virginia Rose Mirabella ( b. 1904 Virginia)

on the 1920 US census is given as daughter of Paul & Mary
both Paul and Mary were born in Italy, they also have a son Peter aged 8 b. New York

they are living Manhattan Assembly District 18, New York, New York

the same census says that Paul (aged 41) and Mary (aged 34) came to the US in 1894 & 1898 respectively and they were granted citizenship in 1917
Paul is a abker and Mary works in a factory i cannot decipher what type of factory sorry

The whole US census sheet is mainly Italian copules with their children

in 1930 Virginia is in Vermont and a registered nurse, she is not with her parents this time and she gives her fathrs place of birth as Parisien Georgia (i think) and mothers p.o.b as Ireland quite different from 1920

BUT

i have found Paul in 1900  & 1910 US census and also his draft WW registration card

1910 US Census
Paulo Mirabella  aged 30 Married (for 6 yrs) odd job labourer
John Mirabella 28 married (for 4 yrs) do.
boarding with a Polianto family at MT Vernon Ward 4, Westchester, New York
i think it says he (and his parents)  was born St Mabe is this in Italy ?

1900 US Census
Paul Mirabella aged 21 single boarder (with a Quige family)
Queens Ward 1, Queens, New York

i was hoping it would show his wife, but sadly no  Undecided it does say Paul was born Feb 1879 though in Italy and confirms his entrance tot he US in 1895

Here's one possible source for Norfolk (city directories):

http://www.npl.lib.va.us/smrt/City_Directories.html
 - in 1904 no Lafaye or similar but there are three listings for the surname Lufsey, one of which is at 187 Holt.
Paul "Mirobella" and a Joseph Mirobella at the same address (196 Holt) are listed as barbers.  (In 1903 there's only a Frank Mirabella, and no Mirabellas by 1905 - the Lufsey's are still there but no longer at Holt).

http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriages.html?index=groom
 - here you can find Paul Mirabella's (second?) marriage was in 1911 (to Maria Gurgone)
There is also a Virginia Mirabella who married in 1923, groom's name not given.
