« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 09:03 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any information on a Agnes Brown b.ca.1813 Ayton, parents Robert Brown & Helen Shearlaw, last known living with parents 1851 at Coldingham with children Isabella 1838, George 1839 & Robert 1847 all born Ayton & illigitimate .

Nothing found on SP for 1861 that connect, parents died before 1861.

Hi Beckey

Maybe Agnes down with the name variant of Nancy for 1861:

Nancy Brown 47, sick nurse b. Catchapewig, Berwickshire
Robt Brown 13 b. Ayton

Address: Road To Eyemouth, Ayton

Possible for 1871:

Agnes Brown 58, seamstress b. Ayton
Address: Main Street, Ayton

Can't see anything that fits for 1881. The only Agnes (or variants) showing with a Berwickshire birth place that year was born in Edrom and is with her children.

That looks a good possibility Ev  Smiley She seemed to be quite consistent with her age and where she lived.

Thank you both,

They look like a good match with the ages, though why change to Nancy then back is puzzling.
I didn't think that I would get Isabella as she was an age to marry.

Looks like I will have to get some more credits with SP and it looks like she didn't marry.
She was my wife's Gt Aunt several times over

Hi Beckey

Can't easily see any entry for Robert in Scotland, nothing showing under his birth place that looks to fit what you have on him.

A possible for George White, nephew to Agnes on her death cert, in 1881 going purely by the link to Ayton:

George White, 28, coachman, b. Ayton working and living in Ayton at the household of Angus Crow.

Maybe connected to this family from 1861 - everyone born in Ayton:

Christian White 50
Helen White 24
Alexander White 22
George White 10
John White 5
Thomas White 1, grandson

Address: Prenderguest Farm Cottage "rd", Ayton

Hi Monica,

Thanks for the info., as it is a nephew there may be more siblings to Agnes than I have found. Have only the 1851 for Ayton and the family had moved to Coldingham by then.

Agnes's brother Robert was already there in the 1841 census Coldingham, will have to try and go through the Brown list on LDS.

Hi Barry

There is a submitted entry for George White on IGI which certainly points to a Brown connection:

GEORGE WHITE Birth: 24 AUG 1850 Ayton, Berwick
Parents:THOMAS WHITE and CHRISTIAN BROWN

From an Ancestry tree, children showing to Robert Brown and Helen Shearlaw, all birth is Ayton:

Robert b. 1801
Isabella b. 1803
Clark b. 1806
James b. 1807
Christian b. 1810
Agnes b. 1813

Hi Monica,

Thank you very much for that info., the LDS didn't help, after 2200 had a list at Ayton but none checked out.
Will keep me going for some time, some may check out on the M.I.'s I have for Ayton.

Just noticed on the A/trees that christening for some of the children is showing in Berwick upon Tweed which verifies with this actual extract on IGI:

ISABELLA BROWN Birth: 06 JUL 1803/ Christening: 13 NOV 1803 Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland,
Parents: ROBERT BROWN and ELEANOR SHEARLAW

If you search under Batch Number: P000221, you will find more entries. Robert may have been illegitimate from the way the entry is written up.

Maybe the family moved on to Ayton or surrounding area by the time of Agnes' birth.

Hi Monica,

Helen/Eleanor was born Norham, Isabella 1851 says Ayton and is unmarried, House serv. at Flemington Mill House.  Christian is at Meikles,Flemington with husband & 5 children.

no wonder I can't find details under Helen/Ellen will have to try again.

Didn't find marriage at Berwick nor Agnes or Clark, got the rest and you looked right about Robert, Shearlaw or Brown.
