Outlook Express/Tesco net. problem help please
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 11:05 UTC (UK) »

I have a big problem.  My Outlook Express site comes up but since last night, when I try to sign in to use email I get the following error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.tesco.net', Server: 'mail.tesco.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

There are three user accounts on the computer, with three different tesco.net email addresses, all three are getting the same message so it is impossible to send or receive emails.

Please ..... what can I do?

Thanks for reply.  I have tried Googling but couldn't really see what to do.

Will have to try ringing Tesco Support and hope there is a simple remedy.

Things seem to have resolved themselves - although it was off a long time.

After checking that all my settings were correct, the only thing I did try was to delete all my browsing history - could that have had some effect?

Hi Selina,

Not much comfort I know but I had the same problem; started last night and seemed to be resolved by early afternoon.   Roll Eyes

Tesco support.........no response to email sent from my back up address.

Hi Nanny Jan,

Thanks and yes actually it is a comfort! It is always good to know that one is not alone with these problems.

In the past I have only once had to contact Tesco support, tried by email and the advice they gave was not of use, then informed that I must phone and that did not help either as all I got was a "well it should work" reply.  That problem, which was with my security package from them, also righted itself but some weeks later.  Otherwise I have always been happy with Tesco as an ISP.

I had started to make a list of people to contact to tell them that I could not receive their emails when the facility returned - I had spent the whole morning fiddling about when I should have been decorating!

Again thanks for your reply.

Tesco.net is somehow tied up with Virgin Media's network, isn't it? They were both ex-NTL.

Parts of Virgin Media went down with power fluctuation problems last night in the south of England, which weren't fixed until today.

Hi Koromo,

I haven't heard anything about that connection with Virgin or NTL.  However I live in South East of England so that matches up.

I often wonder if Tesco internet will disappear as they don't seem to advertise much now, there are still some leaflets instore but little else.

If this is a Virgin.net linked problem then as I am with virgin.net and I can tell you there was a problem with their mail server when I tried to access it the other night (was it Monday night?) and there was a message saying that it was closed for upgrade maintenance.

The following day I logged in and it started downloading 60 messages - which were not new messages, but old sent webmail messages from about a year ago.

Virgin.net or virgin.media Internet servers were down most of the afternoon and early evening today but there is no information about what has been happening on their Service Status page.
