Hard Start in Life - What Happened to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jones.
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 15:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Hope someone may be able to help me here.

I've been trying for the last 5 years  to find out what happened to my Gt Aunt Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jones.
The information I have gathered up until 1911 is as follows:

Name: Elizabeth Jones.

Born 22 Jul 1888. (have Cert) in Oswestry, Shropshire..

Baptised  15 August 1888. (have baptism cert).

Father: John Jones,Labourer.

Mother: Hannah (Carroll) Jones.

1891 Census,  Elizabeth is living with family in Oswestry.

1901 Census,  now living in Oswestry Workhouse, (both parents dead).

1911 Census,  I believe the girl shown below is Elizabeth, living with her Uncle, Aunt & family.

Richard William Jones & wife Margaret, living at 23 Craven St, Chorlton  with 3 sons John William, Samuel & Richard William.  Also in the household are brother David, 36 years & single and
Lizabeth Jane Jones, born in Oswestry age 23, niece & single.

I am at a loss as to how to go further to try & find out what happened to Elizabeth. She had a really hard start in life and I'd like to know what happened to her in later years.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Barbara.

Post 1911 research is not easy.

Some suggestions
1) Look for a marriage for her - but Jones surname will not make it easy
2) Look for deaths and then Wills for Uncle Richard and Aunty MArgaret - they may well mention their neice.
3) Might she be a witness on a marriage cert when her cousins marry?

There are marriages for Elizabeth J Jones in Chorlton Reg Distr in Ap/May/Jn 1911, Jan/Feb/MAr 1920 and Ap/May/Jun 1924 for starters - any or none of these could be her, but you would need the cert to see if fathers name tied up, and address from which she married.
Another approach would be to go through the PArish Registers (if available) from 1911 for whatever Parish Craven Street was in to see if there is a marriage for her.

Hi Lizdb,

Thanks very much for both your replies and the information you have given.

I think that the marriage you have found for an Elizabeth J Jones in 1911 may well be her but as you say I would need to buy the cert to confirm father's name and also address on marriage.

I think it more likely she would marry about 1911 (age would be 23) than in 1920 or 1924 but thats only a guess - it would still be worth £7.00 for a cert , just to find out.

I suppose I could see if there are any Rootschatters in the Look-ups section who might be able to look-up the Chorlton parish records.

I've almost given up on tracing my Gt Aunt but this does give me fresh hope.

Can you tell me please where you found the information on the 1911 marriage ? that would be a big help.

I'm very grateful for your interest .

Thanks a lot

Chorlton Registration District covers a huge part of Manchester and in 1911, there would have been dozens of churches and chapels there.  I think you'd be wasting your time asking for a lookup.  If it was me, I'd jump right in and order the 1911 wedding cert.......but ..........I notice there is also the marriage of an Elizabeth J Jones later in 1911 in Stockport Reg Dist, which isn't very far from Chorlton, in fact it's probably the adjacent district.  Then another in Stockport in 1915....hm, could get expensive   Undecided

Hi Alpine Cottage,

Thanks for your advice.

Hadn't realized what a large area that Chorlton Registration District covers, so yes, I agree that there would be no point in trying for a look-up.

I think I'll probably go ahead and order the cert for the Chorlton area Apr/May/Jun 1911 that lizdb found.

If it's my girl then great, if not then my next try will be the one you found in Stockport later in 1911.

If neither are successful then I'll have to build up funds again and try at a later date.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Barbara
Do you know that if you apply for a certificate from a local registry office, instead of GRO, and if you specify a detail such as "father's name John", then if the father's name is anything other than John, they won't send the certificate or charge you anything.  The only problem with this is you won't know what it does say for father's name, so it might be your Elizabeth and say "Father's name not known" because she could not  remember her father with being orphaned so young, for example.  It's a tricky decision, but you could always reapply at a later date if you draw a blank first time round....hmm, decisions, decisions

Hi Alpine Cottage,

Thanks very much for the information.

As you say, decisions, decisions but I'll have to make one sooner or later.

I've been looking for my Gt Aunt for such a long time - it would be really good if I could find out what happened to her.

I'll probably take up one of the options this week and see what transpires.

In Hope

A short distance , perhaps three streets south of Craven was St Marys Church of England. I was a choir boy at this church. It was a large church with an impressive steeple, Suppose to be the highest in the north west of England.
