"Birch Tree" Pub Shoreditch
« on: Wednesday 08 November 06 13:20 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Does anyone out there have any ideas as to where I can find more information about this Pub. An ancestor John Piper is listed as the publican on the 1881 census at 50 Great James Street, Hoxton. The pub name wasn't on the census but I found that on pubsinlondon.net but there is no photo. Apparently John Piper is listed as the publican in the 1882 and 1884 Post Office Directories as well.

any help would be greatfully received.

Hello

You might try contacting the local Archives.  Judging by the address it will either be Hackney or Tower Hamlets.  There are links to the Archives here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,130729.0.html

Good luck

Hi,

Can anyone help with this lookup.

Birch Tree, 50 Great James Street, Shoreditch

Does anyone have any information on this Pub please, a photo would be great, even a modern one would be good, as my family (John Piper) had the license between C1880-1890.

All I have is the Census's and the listing in the Londonpubs.net to go on so any help would be greatfully received

All best wishes for your own researches

Has you seen this link? I have just spent an hour googling and found nothing worthwhile, I wonder if Hackney BC has a history dept?

Hi,

Thanks for that, that gives me some Directories to try and track down. I contacted Hackney BC and they have nothing.

I will keep trying though, as my GGGrandfather was a Policeman who's beat was this area at the same time who was cousin to John and they must have known each other, and I can imagine an odd few deals going on between them  Grin
