Help with placename please.
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 12:08 UTC (UK) »

I just received a photocopy of my great grandparents marriage record from the General Registration Office.  My great grandmother's residence at time of marriage looks like AUGHAISERUA but I'm not 100% sure.  Google hasn't been any help.  They were married in the church in Ballagh in the Registrar's District of Ballyleague (?).

Can anyone help me decipher the name?

As you can see, my great grandfather was based in Wellingtonbridge, County Wexford.  My great grandmothers address is below it, presumably in County Roscommon.

See www.seanruad.com to find place names in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from 'exact match' to find part of a word).

Hi

Can't help with the townland, but Ballagh would be possibly in the parish of Ballyleague.  If you look at a map it will be between Strokestown and Lanesborough

I found this website yesterday, but there's nothing like it.  I think I'll try scan the document and post it here.

Thanks.

If you can scan the document just post a small portion to see if we can suggest where it might be.

there are 2 Ballagh in Co Roscommon - I'm assuming it's the Ballagh near Ballyleague.

Augha---- is often spelled Agha---- .... so here's a few suggestions

PLU Roscommon
Aghagad, Aghagower in parish of Fuerty,
Aghalahard in parish of Cloonfinlough .. .. .. .. .. nearish to Ballagh
Aghamuck, Aghawerriny in parish of Kilgefin .. .. nearish to Ballagh

PLU Strokestown
Aghamannan in Ballintober N
Aghamore in Lissonuffy

not sure if any of these is all that like the address posted!

The image has been posted after the first replies and although it's hard to read the scanned bit it looks like Wellington? Bridge Co. Wexford Augh_? so could it be in Wexford rather than Roscommon? (there is a place called Wellingtonbridge in Co. Wexford)
