You don't say what information you have already.
In 1841 I see that James was alive, aged 35, and was a potter living at Prestonpans. In the census results after that I can only find Catherine. The ages in 1841 are not accurate.
On family search I see a James Steel born 1796, Whitekirk, E.L. Parents were James Steel and Agnes Purves. That was only a submitted record so I used the free search on Scotland's People and it comes up with the same christening. If you put in only the parents names you will find another 2 births for this couple. Of course this may not be your James or his family.
However, if James and Agnes were the parents they had banns called at Spott and Dunbar in 1794 - again using SP free search.

There are couple of other resources you should try, FamilySearch on LDS site,

in the fathers name input James Steel and mothers name Catherine Simpson, in region, put British Isles, and Scotland in country. Press search and you will get 9 results some duplicates, Some are extracted from the OPR, and others submitted by members which you should treat with caution, some errors are made by members.

In the county field select East Lothian, in place select Prestonpans. put in James Steel, then search, comes up with 6 answers, click on the numbers 1 to 6 and you will see both parents names there.
