Birth of James Reid and Helen Murray-Completed with thanks
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 13:40 UTC (UK) »

I found Helen Murray on Familysearch and it says she was born about 1697 of Uphall, East Lothian and James Reid her spouse was born about 1693.  I have the birth of their daughter Margaret from Scotlandspeople and she was born July 22 1711, that would make Helen Murray about 14 or 15 when she had Margaret.

Does anyone know if this would be a normal age to be married in this time period?

Hi mcleodsyme

Familysearch have a habit of adding 4 years to the male's dob to get the female's dob, when this is unknown.

Don't know of an Uphall in East Lothian.  There's one in West Lothian.

Hi Mcleodsyme

Tread with care on IGI at family search when viewing entries! All entries clearly state whether it is an actualy extract from Old Parish or Statutory Registers or, as in the case of James Reid and Helen Murray's entries, a submitted entry by a member of the LDS Church.

All submitted entries by members, whilst a useful guide, need to be verified where possible with other sources (they can be plain inaccurate  Roll Eyes). Many are correct, but nevertheless, it is only by verifying them that you will be able to establish whether the data is accurate....not always possible the further back you go.

PS: The legal minimum age for marriages for some time after the period you are looking at was 12 yrs for girls and 14 for boys. You don't see many people though marrying at those ages.

Hi

The entry for the births and marriage of James Reid and Helen Murray are given by a member of the LDS Church and I was surprised when  the birth was given as Uphall, East Lothian.  In the birth of their daughter Margaret in 1711 from Scotlandspeople it said Uphall or Strathbrock and I was hoping Strathbrock was in East Lothian which might explain the LDS entry.  I did get James Reid's will from Scotlandspeople and he was married to Helen Murray so that does confirm they were married, but I think I will have some trouble finding  when and were they were born.

Thank you very much for your help

The Uphall which was aka Strathbrock is definitely West Lothian.
