£7 each - make sure you have the ref number from the indexes.

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
You don't mention a date here.   If it is before 1911 then census records may help to distinguish between the two of them.  Naming patterns for their children.   Occupations etc.    Certificates may be the only way but they are expensive.   Let us know what facts you have (without mentioning anyone who may be still living) and I am sure someone will help if they can.

If this is from freebmd.rootsweb.com you can check the potential spouse names by clicking on the page number. Then try to match up the available census info to the potentials.

e.g., if you are looking for marriage John Smith and wife Mary, and there are two possible marriages - one where the wife could be Mary Brown and one where the wife could be Mary Jones (hopefully the names are a bit less common!).
Then you look at censuses before the marriage for Mary Brown and Mary Jones, and see which of them has the right age/birthplace. That is the most likely person. (Although the birth certificate of a child would help confirm it).

Naming patterns for their children.

Hello Karen,  Smiley

I found what Andrea has mentioned above has been a brilliant help with some of my lines, Mo has listed the English naming pattern in this link :

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,409059.0.html

Added found it, the one I always use :

First born son: named after the father's father
Second born son: named after the mother's father
Third born son: named after the father
Fourth born son: named after the father's eldest brother
Fifth born son: named after the father's second oldest brother or mother's oldest brother

First born daughter: named after the mother's mother
Second born daughter: named after the father's mother
Third born daughter: named after the mother
Fourth born daughter: named after the mother's eldest sister
Fifth born daughter: named after the mother's second oldest sister or father's oldest sister

Kind regards,

Pels.

thank you all for your information. the tips are great and have given me extra food for thought and have tied in with what i have found on my other trails.
I am doing the family tree for my husbands family after a recent family gathering brought a flood of emotion that they wanted to try and trace missing relations before it was too late. as im seen as the 'patient' one.. it turned to me.
The story is that their father was married before. 1st marriage produced 2 children, thier mother died giving birth to the 2nd child and the children were placed into the care of grandparents(mothers side).
I have worked with the census as much as possible but unfortunately the children were born just after the last one..
Here is what i have found so far......
Joseph Arthur Roberts (jul 1887 - Jun 1947 ) Ulverston, Lancs.  married in Barrow in Furness in Dec 1908 to  Margaret Ann Osliff  (Dec 1888 - Mar 1914) Barrow in furness. I have found birth records for the 2 children and seeming that they were born 1912/14 there is only a small chance of them still living but i havent found any death records as of yet..
The Childrens records are  Joseph Roberts born 1912 in Birkenhead,(found census of parents boarding there around this time) and Margaret Roberts born Mar 1914 in Barrow in furness.
Would really love to find the marriage records of the children but cant confirm anything as of yet.
Any help on this would be greatly apprieciated

many thanks

another quick question about Joseph... the fact that he was registered as a Joseph A is it  more than likely that he will always show as a Joseph A or could he also pop up as just a  Joseph?

ty just trying to get a feel for how the system works Undecided

He could well be plain Joseph on other surviving documents.
Look out for abbreviations such as Jos. too.

Was one that got removed..Joseph A and Martha Taylor and both are deceased... Cry... onwards to find their children  Smiley
