Colwell Lane, Wivelsfield in 1891 - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 08:18 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find information about the following address :

East Franklands, Colwell Lane, Wivelsfield, Sussex.  This is my Gt-Grandfather's address in the 1891 census. (Herbert Arthur Clifford)

A mystery (for me, anyway!) is that he gives his profession as "poultry farmer" whereas on all other docs (birth certs for his children, including one for the same year) he is "Of independant Means" or "Gentleman".

On the census record, there is also a cross in the box "Neither employer or employed".

I am trying to find out what sort of house it would have been, was there a lot of land........ anything really!  Is there any way of knowing whether he owned or rented the house?

I have found Colwell Lane on Google, but nothing about East Franklands -  another family in the census gives the same address.

Many thanks for any help.

Hi Tilly,

Looking through the 1785 East Sussex Land Tax for Wivelsfield there is the following:
Lands: The Frankland
Owner & Occupier: Mr William Tanner
Rental £16 10s

In 1841 Franklands is occupied by John Chatfield and his family, John is a farmer.

In 1851 it is occupied by Henry Travers Owen (I think it is Owen, hard to tell) and family. There is also a Frankands Cottage occupied by John Mitchell & Family (Groom to Henry Travers Owen) and another cottage occupied by Robert Bignull & Family (Gardener to Mr Owens). Sounds as though it must be a big place !
There is also Franklands Farm occupied by John Chatfield & Family (It says he is a farmer of 16 acres).

In 1861 Franklands has the following families:
George Cox (Gardener) & Family
James Gwilliams Tarring (Clerk of buildings works) & family
James Shepherds (Bricklayers lab) & family
John Chatfield(Farmer of 16 acres) & family

In 1871  there just seems to be John Chatfield now a farmer of 46 acres !

In 1881 it is difficult to read but it looks like our friend John Chatfield again.

In the 1851 enumerator's route Franklands, Franklands Cottage and Franklands Farm are described as being to the west of the turnpike road from Ditchling to Lindfield (B2112) near Lunces and Theobalds which both show on modern maps.   This does not quite tie in with Colwell Lane though as that is to the east of the turnpike road on later maps.   Looking at the route for 1891 it looks as if he is coming down the current A272 from Franklyn Rd, having passed the Sussex Lunatic Asylum to Hurstwood.   There is another Colwell Lane further out off the A272 going south to meet Slugwash Lane.  I suspect that your ancestor was farming in between the two.   The house may be on the A272 (called Lewes Road at that point) as there are lots of big houses set back off the road along there.  It is all in Haywards Heath now.
I hope this is not too confusing.  I have a map in front of me so can see what I mean but you may not!
ESRO at Lewes may well hold more information or there might be something at Chichester.    Have you looked at the A2A site?

Good morning everyone!

Thank you all VERY much for the various information - it certainly gives me an idea of the sort of place it was.

I think that as he was suffering from poor health, he maybe decided to try a healthier lifestyle and moved to the country - and then either bought or rented Franklands, sometime between 1887 and 1891...... the family story is that he at some time owned a big house and cottages, but there are lots of stories about him and his wife and most of them are "exagerated" to say the least!!

I don't think he stayed there very long as on his youngest son's birth cert (1 May 1898) he gives his address as Pinewood Cottages, Heathfield - but still in Sussex.  And when he died in 1900 he had no real estate, so if he ever did own it, he must have sold it.

I am very grateful for all your help and shall certainly go through all the information you have given me.

Regards
Hilary
