I have just received my great grandparents marriage certificate, from 1887,and have come across a puzzle. My great grandmother's name was Mary Elizabeth Hollingworth, she was 24 when she married. Her father is on the marriage certificate as, Joseph Hollingworth, a farmer. The witnesses were Joseph Hollingworth, and Deborah Hollingworth. The marriage took place in Derby. Mary Elizabeth was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire, in 1863. I tried looking up her parents, on the 1871 and 1881 census, they are, Joseph b 1818, and Eliza b 1820 in Canada USA, Joseph is a farmer, but their daughter is Elizabeth, not Mary Elizabeth. Could they have made a mistake with her name on both census, or have I got the wrong person? On later census after she married my great grandfather, and on her gravestone, she is definatly Mary Elizabeth.

This probably just means that she was usually known as Elizabeth. Names on census records often differ from the names that people were given at birth - the enumerator just copied down what was written on the householder's schedule.
If whoever filled in the schedule decided not to write down people's full names, or to write 'Tom' or 'Susan' instead of 'Thomas' or 'Susannah', that would be what ended up in the enumerator's book.

Thank you for your help, I wasn't sure if I had the right person, but it seems it must be her. Now I have to inform a few others, that they have the wrong person on their family tree, as they have different parents for Mary Elizabeth.

The 1871 census also has "Deborah" listed as a child of this couple.
As she is a witness on the marriage certificate...this is another person that matches on locating them in the census.
