Hi folks,
I'm venturing into English records for almost the first time and would really appreciate some help.

I'm trying to find out as much as possible about the family of George Holiday born 11 Feb 1883 in Durham.

I got his date of birth from his WW11 draft record and also know from that, he was married to Josephine.

He emigrated to Canada, and subsequently Ohio in USA, prior to his marriage I think.

Because of my inexperience in searching English records, I'm not sure where to look for more info so I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

Ideally, I am looking for a copy of his birth record, details of his parents and / or any siblings.

Thanks for any help or guidance you can give me.

Hi Dave
www.freebmd.org.uk is very good coverage of all BMDs across that time frame. One problem will be identifying whether he was born in Durham City or County Durham but actually there only appears to be one possible entry in that quarter so you may be in luck. I did not check alternative spellings though. Might be worth trying the IGI too though coverage in Durham is not brilliant. The 1891 census may show him with parents and other children.

His birth was registered in the Mar ¼ 1883 GRO Reference Durham 10a 388

Ermm - where do I apply for the cert? I'm so used to checking Scottish records - I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to England.
Any ideas on cost? (Scottish meanness coming out again) Wink

If you want to order the cert, it can be done through Durham County Council website - the birth is also on there - (registered in Durham central district) and you can also pay online: http://nd.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0943511050505052009$

Ordering from Durham may be quicker than through the GRO though

RG12 Piece 4077 Folio 35 Page 6
Single Row, Crook And Billy Row, Sunnyside, County Durham

But it might be better to wait for the birth cert, there are a couple of other possibles
