Was he alone
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 16:04 UTC (UK) »

My gr-grandfather Alexander McGuigan was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He died on 31st August 1908 of Pneumonia and Heart attack in Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot. I have managed to get his death cert. and details of his burial. He was interred in the Garrison Cemetery. His burial record states that at the time of his death he resided in the married quarters of Salamanca Barracks which is just beside the hospital. Does this mean that his wife and possibly 2 children were with him when he died and if so is there any way I can positively discover who was with him when he died or if they were resident in the barracks?Huh

I doubt it Wendi... Cry

It appears that soldiers who died in service had their records destroyed after 20yrs...

If your chap was in married quarters, it would be more than reasonable to assume he was on an accompanied posting, and his family were hard by.

Where they went after his death would be interesting....Have you found them on the 1911 census?

Roll Eyes oh well........ I guess that just leaves the Records of Soldier's Effects held by The National Army Museum, but I fear the information those may hold will be the same as Bardany already has  Undecided

Many thanks Scrimnet and Wendi for taking the trouble to reply. I have found my gr-granny on the 1911 census in Belfast, Northern Ireland where she had originally met and maried my gr-granda. I will continue my search and will post again if successful.
Thanks again Bardany
