How do I Transfer Data from one Family History Programme to a new different one
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 18:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Hope some clever person out there can help/advise me please.

I have my all my Family history details on ' Family Historian ' but rather than purchase a needed upgrade, I am thinking of buying a different programme.

My problem/question is :

How can I transfer detail from my existing programme ?

Is it possible to do it or do I have to stick with what I've got.

Any advice /instruction would be appreciated.

Cheers

Barbara.

not sure about the clever bit lol but
i havn't used Family Historian but pretty sure they use gedcom, so its a matter of downloading the gedcom, and then upload to your new programme, making sure before you delete Family Historian,
your comfortable with whichever you choose and all your data has transferred

best to when you have decided which new one, is to post again how to upload etc

You can always transfer data between different makes of genealogy software by exporting and importing a GEDCOM file.

Go to the help section of your current program and read about how to create a gedcom file.  You can then copy the gedcom file to a memeory stick.  You can also copy it to another place on your hard drive like My Documents and then import the file when you get your new software.

You may lose some features when you export data into a gedcom file but most of the data will be transferred across.

Unlike other programs, which use their own database formats, Family Historian uses the Gedcom format to store most data. The word "most" is important because Gedcom does not cater for the storage of multimedia files (photographs, documents, OLE objects etc.). Family Historian stores such files separately.

That means that you do not have to specifically export the data as a Gedcom, you can simply load the FH (Gedcom) file directly into the new program. If you have any multimedia files you will have to load them individually into the new database once created.

Hi Les, Graham & Downside,

Thank you all for the various instructions & information.

I have printed them off to have to hand  in the event that I  do decide to take the plunge and change the programme.

Thanks again for the advice

Barbara.
