There are some records for a Thomas Morrey in Queensland:
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au - mentions a Thomas Morrey who charged his wife Emma in 1865 with stealing clothes from  him, and Thomas Morrey, an "old resident", found deceased in 1886.  He is described as a native of Lancashire, who came to Rockhampton, QLD, in the 1860s.

Hi Sandra,

My convict came to Australia also around the time that your Thomas did and as I am currently researching the convict years I do know at this time they were starting to take the convicts to Hobart Tasmania. I checked for your man and my hunch was right. Thomas Morrey on the Moffatt in 1834. He went to Tas and most probably was at the notorious Port Arthur with my convicts. Apparently the chain gangs were unbearable and the torture from guards was quite horrific. Google Port Arthur and read about how they were treated its very interesting.

Now to see Thomas' scanned record of his conduct go to Tas Archives convict index http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11 and search for him. It will give you a link with numbers in it next to his name. Click on that and then click on the link for 'Conduct Record' then click on the link that says 'view this record' ...this will give you a scanned copy of his actual record. He is on pg 15.  Anyway lucky you to have so much info about your convict. Both mine have basic details and then a blank page.

You can also see what other records they might have for Thomas in the Tas Archives http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes

and i think you can also get in touch with the archives and ask them for further help or info.

All the best,
Kim May

I too have wondered what became of Thos Morrey after being transported toTasmania. He was a realtive of mine (sort of, anyway).

Thomas was born while his mother Edith was under sentence of death by hanging in 1813. She should have been executed with her lover, one John Lomas, for the murder of her husband George in 1812. After Thomas' birth she was executed.

Edith's maiden name was Coomer, and this is my family connection. Not one that we are proud of, I might add!

A book "Rope Dance" by Maureen Nield tells this entire gruesome story. Search Amazon, or the Cheshire County Council Libraries (?) site for info on it.

If you or anybody else is able to trace Thomas Morrey after Tasmania, I would appreciate being informed.
