West Bromwich Workhouse
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 13:36 UTC (UK) »

Are there any records for the West  Bromwich Workhouse? My Gr x 3 Grandmother Alice Bassett (Nee McCann) is shown as an inmate there in 1861 aged 48. Her children Elizabeth 19 and Jabez 15 were living alone. In 1871 she was with Jabez and died in 1874.

Thanks

Hi,

Have you tried this link:

www.westbrompaupers.org.uk

Its got all sorts of information about:
West Bromwich Workhouse
The Poor House foundations
A Brief Chronology
Guardians of the Workhouse
Growth of the Poor House
Admission to the Poor House
Classification of Inmates
Daily Routine
Work
Children in the Work House
West Bromwich Union Infirmary
Local Goverment Act 1929

Sadly lots of my relations ended up in West Bromwich Workhouse and my Great, Great Great Uncle Benjamin was only 12 years old. He died of TB at 18 years old maybe in the workhouse (what a life).

I'm not sure if you know but a paupers memorial was erected in West Bromwich to pay respect to all those inmates who died while in the workhouse. If you died a pauper in the workhouse you weren't deemed worthy of a grave and was buried in mass unmarked ones Sad. The link I gave should help with information on records etc.

All the best

Thank you Adrian. What an interesting websiste ! I will certainly look at in some deatil.

Do you know if they have indexed any names of inmates at all?  I couldn't see any search facility.

I am so pleased , although it is sad, they have erected a memorial. I don't live in that area and had no idea they were doing this.

Regards
