COMPLETED: Crimean war: William Ralston
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 20:46 UTC (UK) »

Bit of a long shot - for a long time I've been looking to establish what happened to William Ralston, whose youngest child was born in 1854 but appears to have died before 1858 (when his wife died - she was described as a widow).  William would only have been in his late 20s or early 30s, having been born about 1825 in Lanarkshire.  He married and had children in Birkenhead and worked as a stone mason - but having exhausted local death and burial indices it looks like he didn't die in the area.  Is there any way of establishing if he perhaps joined up - I presume there may have been some sort of recruitment drive with the outbreak of the Crimean War?  Does anyone have access to casualty lists perhaps?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks
Richard.

COMPLETED - turns out he died in New York on 25 Aug 1854.
