Craven Street, Chorlton.
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 22:47 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I've recently found some relatives on the 1911 Census who were living in Craven street, Chorlton.

Anyone know if this street still exists please.

Thanks

Barbara.

Hi,

Which Chorlton?  Chorlton cum Hardy or Chorlton on Medlock.

Regards,
Mo

Hi Mo,

Oh dear, I don't know which one.

Only info I have was passed to me from a cousin, who had found our relatives on the 1911 Census with the address shown as 23 Craven street, Chorlton.

All I know is that there were also other relatives living in Hulme, don't know if that helps at all.

There was a Craven Street in Hulme, which is in Chorlton (on Medlock) Registration District.  It is no longer there, Hulme was massively redeveloped during the 1960's and most, if not all, the old housing was demolished.  I was at school in Hulme/Moss Side at the time.

Hi alpine cottage,

Thanks very much for that information.

I'm sure that's the right 'chorlton' because the families generally stuck together if possible then.

Cheers

For alpine cottage,

Have since been told that the 'other relatives' lived in Dunham Street, Hulme.

Would you know if that was near to Craven St, Chorlton?.

Hi,
cheekily jumping in while Alpine is offline, hope thats all right. I found Craven St, Chorlton/Hulme on Orinoco's linked maps.  It was a small street coming off Upper Moss Lane.

Go to the 1935 map in the link and click square 3b.
Find the crossroads at Stretford Rd and Moss Lane - two big roads at top of the square, below the word 'Hulme'. Go south, that is, down Moss Lane. Craven St is about the 7th road down on the right hand side.

Then if you go back up Moss Lane to Stretford Rd, turn right along Stretford Rd past Hulme Town Hall, you should find Dunham St by the E of the big word 'Hulme'

Hope you're not lost! I'm sure Alpine will describe it better on return

If you look on the Artus website suggested above, Hulme is in the north-east corner of the south-west quadrant of the Manchester maps.  You will see lots of streets both north and south of Stretford Road - that's Hulme.  You may spot Craven Street and Dunham Street if you peer closely enough! but they can't be far apart as Hulme itself is only about 1 mile x 1 mile.  The old housing was very dense - row after row of little terraced houses, no gardens, just opened onto the street with a tiny yard behind (if you were lucky)

To the list member who said they went to school in Hulme and Moss Side , was this St Mary's School? I went to that school. I lived near the school in Stockton street in Moss Side.
