waiting for certificate
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 23:48 UTC (UK) »

Hi All
I have ordered some certificate's from Roscommon  it has now been 5 week's and I have still not received  them. Has anyone else waited this long for a certificate most of the time I phone the Dublin office and order them over the phone and  only have to wait about 4 day's but because of the date's I wanted I had to send off to Roscommon for them as they won't tell you anythink over the phone. Do you think I should phone them or wait a bit longer.

I haven't ordered any certificates myself lately but I've heard that it seems to be taking longer at the moment (possibly because civil index is online making it easier to know which certificate to order) with somthing like 4-6 weeks for orders but perhaps someone else will be able to confirm this.

Hi Aghadowey and Tabily
Thank you for your reply's This is not the first time I have sent off for this Certificate.  It was about a year ago that I First  sent off  for it and I only had the names James Dunne Margaret Mellon Married Gorey Wexford 1874. I waited about 6 week's then received a reply saying they could not find it but they charged me 4 euro for the search and said they would send me the change 6 euro back but I  still have  not received it.  So I was pleased when I found the Vol 17 and the Page 725 so sent of again Thinking it would be quicker.  I do like the Dublin office as they check while you are on the the phone and if they can't find it they  don't charged you. I will wait another week and then phone them Thank you for your help.

Hi

I check on this if I was you as I faxed an order through to them with the references number about 3 weeks ago and got the certificate about 10 days later.

Dear Manus,
To me, 5 weeks seems a long time to wait; when I ordered a certificate from Dublin by order form, I didn't wait that long. I did order some more a couple of days ago and they said it would take about 5 working days for them to arrive, so we'll see. However, since you are getting messed around, I would recommend the following people:

Wexford Births, Marriages and Deaths,
The Registration Office,
Community Care Centre,
Grogan's Road,
Wexford.

Tel: 0035305323522

Write to them at the above address (you don't need to include the "Wexford Births, Marriages and Deaths" line) and explain to them that you have ancestors from Wexford and give as much information as you can. I wrote off to them with a huge list of great-uncles and aunts and although they were not able to find all of them, they found more than the people in Dublin were able to and you may have more luck with them. What you need to do is include a self-addressed envelope with your request (for them to send back to you) but do not put a stamp on it, because they will need to use an Irish stamp. When I wrote to them, I was astounded at how quickly they wrote back.
If they don't find anything, it's always worth including in your letter a question to them asking if they might know of somewhere else that would. (When I called the Donegal Births, Marriages and Deaths, they couldn't find a marriage cert for me, but they gave me contacts for other places.)
Best of luck,

Hi tamsin

Thank you so much for your help. I have now received the marriage certificate after nearly 6 week's Smiley I have still got so many more to find as most of my mum's family came from Gorey Wexford so all the information you have gave me will be great help.  How did you pay for it did you send the money with the letter or just put your card details. Hope you don't mind me asking just so I will know what to do.

Hi Manus,
Of course I don't mind you asking. I'm afraid I've only been doing this myself recently, and the letter from Wexford Births, Marriages and Deaths therefore only arrived a couple of days ago (I first wrote about a week ago). However, they say that they accept payment by credit card, bank draft or postal order. They were able to find 7 certificates for me (Dublin could only find 3) and their total comes to 43 euros, including research costs. Here's the procedure I have followed with them so far:
I wrote to them at the address given before (after phoning them), just giving as much info as possible.
They then sent my letter back to me (heavily annotated) and beside each name and date I had given them, they had written whether or not they could find it. Where they had been successful, they had written an ID/Reference number beside the name. They asked me to send this letter back to them again, telling them which (of the certificates found) I wished to purchase (they need the letter for the ID numbers).
Payment can be made by credit card, bank draft or postal order. I requested a search for a total of 7 certificates (in Dublin, they could only find 3). The total came to 43 euros, including the research fees.

This is the point I have got up to. I wrote on the 14th of October and the letter arrived on Saturday. Since I'm not keen on giving out credit card details by post, I'm going to phone them (with the ID numbers) and try to order them that way, hopefully tomorrow (work permitting) or, if not, Wednesday. Once I have, I'll send you a post to let you know if they'll take orders over the phone.

Sorry Manus - meant to mention something else. I notice that the first certificate you sent for was from 1874? Just to say that the Wexford address will only be able to help for things after civil registration was enforced in the 1860s - if you want any older certificates, they probably won't be able to help you.

Hi Manus, we called Wexford today and ordered the certificates by credit card over the phone - they were happy to take the order this way and promised to send them out tomorrow. It's been a very good, helpful service so far and very quick. The earliest certificate we have ordered is from 1891.
