Aaaaaargh!!! Wrong docs!!
« on: Monday 05 October 09 11:21 UTC (UK) »

Got G Grandad's birth cert today, I was all excited until..... I realised I'd ordered the wrong one! I thought the ref no was for the correct one but the parents names are wrong (I've been through all the censuses) so that was a waste of time (and £). How I wish I'd gone with my first idea and ordered his marriage cert instead... back to square one then... *slaps own head*

And I keep doing it - you'd think I'd learn.  For instance just recently sent off for a death cert dated 1838 that I thought would be my 3 x g.grandfather before I'd checked whether he was on the 1841 census.  He was Huh

sent off for a marriage cert, thought i would be smart and apply in the wife's name cos the spelling was wrong for the husband. wrong the spelling was right and my pair had got married 4 years earlier and kept it secret so they where both down as single on the 1901.  got 3 death certs aswell hoping they would say widwer of ? they didnt. so im no further along.

I had about 5 or 6 wrong certificates for my grandfather, because I didn't even definitely know the year he died, let alone where.  My father never kept in touch with his side of the family when he was alive, and he's been dead for 26 years.  I didn't have any contact with any of his family.   All I knew was that my grandfather was a master bricklayer, was alive in 1922 when my father was married the first time, and that he was dead when my father married the second time in 1946.  I also knew that he was living in the Greenwich area for much of his life.  I'd more or less run out of suitable "candidates".

Eventually I made contact with a cousin on my father's side, and she told me that my grandfather died in 1945 in Kensington, London.   What was a master bricklayer from Greenwich doing in Kensington ?  Well, apparently, by the time my grandfather died he had annoyed his sons so much that the only one who would take him in was his youngest son, who lived in St Johns Wood.  When my grandfather became ill, he was taken in to St Charles Hospital, Kensington, where he died.
