Order of Filiation
« on: Monday 05 October 09 12:19 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I have just found some information on the A2A site re an Order of  Filiation relating to an ancestor, which came as a surprise.  Before I send for a copy could anyone tell me if it will give me any more info than I can see on the site and if so will I be able to read it?

Many thanks.

If it's one of those stored at the Lancashire Record Office, the usual format was a pre-printed form with spaces into which the Clerk Of The Court filled the details.

The usual details are:
The name of the mother and her township
The name of the purported father and his township and probably trade
The sex & possibly the name of the child
   Usually the date of birth
The amount to be paid by the father to the Overseers of the Poor
The amount to be paid by the mother to the Overseers of the Poor (she was expected to work)

To be honest, the LRO index gives most of the genealogical detail for the records in their keeping.

The amazing thing is that there would be different pre-printed forms for variations for things such as the father not turning up to court. The court must have handled thousands of cases to make that worthwile.

Many Thanks for your reply.  The ancestor I mentioned is not directly related but the sister of my direct ancestor.  The father & mother went onto get married 1 year later (maybe a shotgun wedding) Wink

I have never used the LRO or A2A before and I'm not  sure what is available or how accessible they are.

Fascinating stuff though.

Could you tell me if a will was made in the 17th cen in Leigh ( Lancs) would I be able to get a copy from the LRO?
