Scanning help please
« on: Monday 05 October 09 20:36 UTC (UK) »

Since scanning the ambrotype I posted *here* I have changed the scanner - it was an old one and wouldn't work with Windows XP. The new scanner is fine for scanning flat documents, but I have a couple of other ambrotypes that need scanning & it is making a really poor job of them. The frames are fine, but the picture itself is too dark.I would put it down to the fact that the pictures aren't flat & therefore the exposure of the photo surface is wrong.
The scanner I have is a brother DCP115 & I've checked the software & there doesn't seem any way of changing the exposure.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Thanks

Is it possible to remove the frame?

It would probably solve many of your problems.

Hi
thanks for replying. Unfortunately it isn't possible to remove the frame - the gold part at least is an integral part of the picture. Nice suggestion though...

Hi

If you can't get a proper contact of your photo with the scanner bed, then you'll not get a good scan - dark, out of focus, etc.

There are a few options -

one, as Downside has suggested, which might ruin the originals

two, put up the scans that you have and see if we can do anything to improve them, restoration-wise.

three, take as good a photo as you can of the originals

Can't think of any other way  Undecided

Hi BD  Smiley

Actually it is relatively easy to remove the frame from an ambrotype and will not damage the image or the frame if done correctly.  If you would like me to email you some detailed instructions, I'd be happy to - just PM me your email address (while easy to remove, it's a delicate operation).

I have had great success with scanning ambrotypes both in and out of their frames.  The other way to do it is to take a good, closeup digital photograph, but you would need a steady hand or tripod, and no flash.

You probably already have this, but just in case...there's a software user guide available for this scanner at  http://www.rootschat.com/links/078i/

If you have imaging software such as Photoshop, you might be able to scan directly into that.

Not sure how much functionality you will be able to get out of the scanner, considering that it's a multi-function centre you will find that some functions will be compromised in the attempt to make an all-in-one device.

Thanks for that link, I actually don't have that book. I've had a quick look & will try to alter settings using that before trying anything as radical as taking the frame off.
Thanks again.
