Hello Would it be possible to check if a marriage that took place in Godmanstone, on 14 oct 1783 has the correct name, please. On IGI it states Thomas Painter and Elizabeth Frampton..... in the Dorset OPC it states John Painter. Just had a reply from Dorset opc, that it may be a John, but could someone please check the original. I would be very grateful.....and happy if it was indeed John, as opposed to Thomas ! kind regards Hobbyhorse

Can't see any IGI entry with spouse as Thomas
There are 2 entries - one extracted and one submitted which both show John Painter

Hi
I've just checked the Dorset Marriages rather than the IGI and have:
Godmanstone, 14 Oct 1783
Marriage: John Painter and Elizabeth Frampton
Witnesses: Thomas Biles and Thomas Fore
I wonder if the witnesses names got confused with the groom's
Regards

So the IGI confirms the parish record then, Carole

Hi Gadget
Yes - did you see my earlier reply above? Both the submitted and extracted record shows spouse as John and I can't see anything else on the IGI showing spouse as Thomas for that profile

Well, I've looked through the records and don't see a Thomas at all, except for the witnesses.
I've not looked for a marriage for him though, only Elizabeth.
Will go see

For what it's worth, the only marriage in Dorset for a Thoams Painter around that time is:
Yetminster
18 April 1778
Thomas Painter to Ann Maidment
Witnesses - Ann Painter and David Brake
All but David Brake made their marks.

Hello Thanks to all for very kindly looking. It's brilliant that it is indeed John Painter, as he is my ancestor. I wonder if Elizabeth Frampton is from Godmanstone as well. If anyone has access to the Godmanstone records, I would be extremely grateful for any baptisms of John and Elizabeth's children and any information regarding Elizabeth Frampton. I have been looking for these people for years and it is so nice that people have been very helpful. Thankyou Hobbyhorse

The IGI has details of Elizabeth, John, Martha and Thomas - all submitted entries so there is somebody else researching the same family

The information that I've put up is from the parish register indexes for Dorset so would be pretty accurate

Just gone up to 1812 and there are no more baptisms after the 1803 one.

Hello Thanks for all the baptism details. It's very exciting to get these details, after years of looking for the Painter family. John's son Edmond is my ancestor. He was a butler/ domestic servant. He always said that he was born around 1810, but the 1800 baptism must be him ! It looks like he was a twin. thankyou for this information. It is very much appreciated. Hobbyhorse
