Michael Mealia
« on: Monday 05 October 09 23:31 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for any information regarding the family of Michael Mealia my gggf who joined the 99th Foot in Athlone as a labourer in August 1839 at age 18years.  He was born in the St Peters parish in Athlone,  Roscommon.  He was pensioned off in Dublin in October 1860 after serving 21 years in Australia.  He returned to Western Australia on the York arriving New Years Eve 1862 as an Enrolled Pensioner Guard.

There is an entry for Melia listed in the 1833 Tithe Applotment records for St. Peters Civil parish. See LDS film 256684 or National library Ireland Tithe Applotment film 90 - 25/55. The state library in Queensland have the National library film.
.
Don’t be set on the surname spelling. Remember clerks wrote down what they heard.
.
In 1898 the following Townlands in St. Peters Civil parish transferred to County Westmeath:
Athlone and Bigmeadow
Canal and Banks
Ranelagh
Bellaugh (part only)
Bogganfin (part only)
Doovoge (part only)
Monksland (part only)

For Athlone Catholic parish records 1789 -1880 see LDS films 989750 & 989754.

See also St.Mary's Parish, Athlone Co. Westmeath, 1813-1984 LDS films 1279225 & 1279226

Do you know the names of Michael’s parents?
The LDS British Isles Vital Records set of 16 CDs lists the following birth:
MELIA, Elizabeth, Christening, Christening Date: 17 Dec 1831
Recorded in Athlone and Drum Catholic Parish, Roscommon, Ireland
Father:   Andreae MELIA, Mother: Mariae KEARNEY
Source:   FHL Film 989750.

Thank you John for the information and effort.  When we were in Athlone Oct 2008 St Marys Parish located a Mary chr 1 june 1820 and Thomas Melia 12 Oct 1823 parents Thomas and Mary Rice.  However we were unable to find any record of Michael.  Apparently Melia could be a derivation of O'Malley or O'Maele. Hard to be sure about these things as to relationships between the Melia families in the area.
I can recall looking at parish records some years in the local LDS family history centre but record was very difficult to read.
I will have another look at the films mentioned as I probably didn't view the Tithe Applotment record.
Thanks again
