Leytonstone Christening
« on: Monday 05 October 09 23:49 UTC (UK) »

Hi everybody

I have located an IGI entry for my Gt Grand Mother Kezia Goldstone who was christened at St John The Baptist Church, Leytonstone, Essex, on 25 March 1838.

I have searched for a few years and have so far failed to find a birth record for her.  Her parents were James Goldstone also born Leytonstone, Essex and Ann Hester born St Clements Dane, Westminster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tom,

Registration was in it's infancy in 1838 having only begun in July 1837, many births went unrecorded at that time, so I'm afraid you are unlikely to find anything other than the baptism you already have.

And of course, depending on how ols she was when christenend, she could actually have been born before July 1837.

I agree with Jebber - just be thankful you have found the christening record!

As you probably know Leytonstone was once a village in Essex rather than a part of Greater London.
I looked at the website of Essex Record Office to see what parish registers are held there. It says that the earliest baptism register for St John's Leytonstone dates from 1833 and the original and any copies therof are held at Vestry House Museum run by LB of Waltham Forest in Walthamstow.
The IGI entry does not quote any source information so it may well be that there is more information in the parish register. I don't get to the Vestry House Museum very often but I have noticed that Essex Record Office does hold the Bishop's Transcripts* for St John's for the relevant period so I'll see what they reveal when I get the chance.

*Bishop's Transcripts were copies of the registers required to be sent by the parish to the Bishop to guard against the consequences of  the very real possibility that the original registers might be lost or damaged by the parish.

Hi Clincher

Many thanks for your response and your kind offer to follow up when you get the opportunity.

It has been frustrating knowing the information, especially when no source information is posted on the IGI that it can be suspect, but with no other reference I have been searching in vain and it would be great to get verification and be in a position to perhaps obtain a birth certificate.

Again many thanks and look forward to hearing from you some time in the future.
