Basic History Quetion but I dont know the answer!
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 10:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm sure there is a very simple answer to this question but at the moment I cant seem to find the answer!

What was happening in 1871/1881 for there to be alot of Royal Marines to be in my family?  I have come across literally at least 20-30 rellies who are in the RM on the census for 71 and 81, different branches of my family and I would like to know if there is a particular event around this time which would involve the Royal Marines.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Thank you Neilke, I knew some bright spark would have the answer for me - what a fabulous Royal Navy site, will make very interesting reading.

Well the simple answer is that there was no one historical event that would account for them all being RM.
Most probably the Marines were in the blood, a family tradition. It's that simple

Yes its interesting to see how things run in families.

These RMs are coming from many different branches of my family tree right up to my late grandpa.

Thanks again

Have you accessed the seaman's records that are online at TNA?  I have a service record for a RM who served from 1890.

Hi

Benzon- yes I have had a look at TNA royal marine records but I am confused as to how to access to correct person.  There are various places/ports ie Chatham, Portsmouth and I have no idea at the moment exactly what these marines did and what regiment (?) they would fall into.  Perhaps I need to investigate the royal marines more indepth but I don't know where to start really.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Thanks in anticipation ...

Westwood they would have been RMLI or RMA (Infantry  or Artillery)
The census may give the battalions somewhere on them.
Thats a lot of money to download all your rellies service certs at £3.50 a shot Sad

If you have any photos in uniforms you should be able to distinguish RMA/RMLI.
