How do I find out my father's rise up the ranks
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 12:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi there -

My brother is sorting out photos for a family album - is it possible to find out in the years in which my late father was promoted to each rank?

e.g. he entered as a Corporal and ended up a Major. I'd like details of each promotion.

thank you in advance

The complexities of tracing an army record are dealt with in many posts on this board and depend on when and what regiment is involved.  For some periods records have been lost.

Moving from a non-commissioned rank to eventually become a major is fairly unusual.  The ceiling was usually at Regimental Sergeant Major.  Although wartime promotions of this sort were more frequent.  This change of rank will probably mean that you need to switch the sources of your search.

You may find that a search for him in the London Gazette wil give you a basic outline from which to move on.

He he ....I did it as well!! Grin But I jumped most of the ranks!

A very good soldier could make it up to the Sgts mess quite easily...And if he was exceptional, he would become "Top Soldier"ie the RSM

From here is is quite usual to become the QM.

He may well have stayed in the same Regt for this.

There is a way of very good SNCOs to become officers the "Late Entry" or LE commission. An LE can also apply for a commission in another  Regt or Corps.

If he stayed in the same Regt, it may be useful to consult the Regt Journals....he could well be followed thus.

Also, have you applied for his records from the Veterans Agency?

Finally....you could pop the pics you have up, and we will sort them for you Grin

Thank you very much - I may well scan some photos in!

He went from Devonshire Regt. through Royal Berks, Duke of Edinburghs, Royal Wilts - a bit confusing this is!!

Phil

You will probably be able to get some information from the Regimental Museum.

I have just passed on all the Regimental Journals to my son, otherwise I would have offered to go through them for you.
