Thankyou, that was quick! I have found a date of death of 1857, but it was 1857? so it "could be" that she was struck down with something - but then to go and marry the sister!

Further to my earlier post, Ellizabeth and Sarah Batstone nee Wilminton where my great great aunts. John Batestone was born in Luppit 1834/5 and married Elizabeth in Dec 1856. Elizabeth died in Dec 1867. John then married her sister Sarah in June 1868. My question is,, as Elizabeth was "only" 33 when she died and Sarah lived until she was 94, what happened to Elizabeth? and was there any "scandal" connected to the 2nd marriage - because John married her sister only a few months later

The gap between the death of one wife and his remarriage would not have been a problem. Most men with children would have had to remarry quickly. The problem lies in his marrying his wife's sister - not legal at the time in the UK

By the way, the June & Dec in the GRO refs are quarters, so death registered October, November or December and marriage registered April, May or June,
